Name: Stella Breed Guess: Lab and terrier mix Age Guess: 3 years as of November 2024 Gender: Female Approximate Weight: 44 lbs. Gets Along With: Other dogs! We haven't seen her with kids but she can be tested. We also haven't seen her with cats, but we are happy to discuss integration techniques with any potential adopters! Location: DC area boarding partner - would love a foster home while looking for her forever family! View more cute photos of Stella here: flic.kr/s/aHBqjBUBPU About Stella: Looking for a cheerful companion? Stella is a young, easy going, and eager pup ready to play and go out on long walks with you. She is very social, gets along with other dogs and is friendly with humans. Stella is attentive, confident, and offers plenty of kisses and an adorable gaze. Stella is accepting of crate time when needed and waits to be outside for potty time; to entertain herself, her favorite toy is a squeaky hard plastic shark and chasing a ball out in the backyard. Bonus Facts: LOVES other dogs and lives with another dog currently Sleeps through the night in her crate Is always happy Loves long walks and sniffy walks Enjoys playing fetch Food motivated and very smart - would excel in training Knows her name! Her favorite toys are chew toys or study plushies (like Tuffy brand) Stella loves belly rubs and her favorite place to be is curled up next to her person. She is the most affectionate dog you will ever meet. Medical: Stella is heartworm positive, but this Lucky Dog got extra lucky! This pup is part of a groundbreaking study we are conducting at our South Carolina Rescue Campus that has the potential to change the way shelters across the United States treat heartworm positive dogs. All dogs in the study are placed at random in either the 2 shot or 3 shot protocol with strictly monitored protocols in place. Four weeks following their final injection, the pups are eligible to transport to the DC area for placement in foster or adoptive care. After treatment concludes, we work with adopters to arrange a free follow up heartworm test after 6 months, followed by a second test at 9 months. We are happy to discuss this treatment and which phase of the study this Lucky Dog is in right now! Just email the adoption coordinator - the address is at lower left! Lucky Dog cannot guarantee any dog is housebroken. All of our dogs are working on their crate training. TO ADOPT: The adoption fee for this dog is $475, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations, spay/neuter, and heartworm treatment. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
