had a home, they were kept in the basement and did not have the care or engagement they deserved. Both dogs came into the rescue in dire need of dental work, both living with pain and infection. Both pups have since been fully vetted, had dental work, and been groomed. NOTE: Charlie and Clyde are not bonded, but they are friends. They have been living in separate foster homes and doing well. They can be adopted as a pair or separately Charlie has been living in a wonderful local foster home for the past few months, getting lots of love and attention. He is flourishing and is an exceptionally sweet, social, and easygoing senior who does well with cats, dogs, and all people. He still has a bounce in his step when it’s food time or heading out for a walk. Every once in a while, he will get the zoomies and run up and down the hall as quickly as he can. He loves being part of a family and will greet you with joy and enthusiasm when you come home. He just wants to belong and have his people to love. Charlie is a low to moderate-energy dog and champion cuddler. He follows his foster mom from room to room and immediately jumps in her lap when she sits down. He enjoys the company of other dogs, so we think another laidback pup in his home would be ideal. He’s not one to engage in play and is not very focused on toys, but he’s a respectful pup with a live-and-let-live attitude and makes a great pup companion. He also enjoys his walks and has good leash skills. We feel Charlie will do best with an owner who has a flexible schedule, preferably someone who works from home or is retired, to accommodate his need for potty breaks every 3–4 hours during the day. At night, though, he sleeps soundly without any issues. We also really want a calm dog buddy in the home for him. Charlie is a sweet and calm pup who deserves to live out his golden years in a loving home. He has good house manners, doesn’t chew on things, makes a good pup companion, and loves to cuddle. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
