with other dogs at the ranch and enjoys lounging on the floor, couch, or in his crate. A great hiker, Reggie could use a job, but more than anything, he needs a yard and lots of love. If you're ready for a big-hearted companion, schedule a visit to meet Reggie today! He loves his humans and is eager to bring joy and affection into your home. Physical Profile Weight: 70 Age: 2 years 3 months Altered: Yes Gender: Male Microchipped: Yes Breed: Australian Shepherd Mix Reggie– Loyal Soul Seeking a Calm, Loving Home Reggie is a gentle soul with a heart full of love, just waiting for the right person to notice him. He enjoys his meals and toys in his own space, and prefers slow, gentle handling that allows trust to grow naturally. With patience, you'll discover a devoted and loyal friend who will stand by your side through thick and thin. Once Reggie chooses you, you’ve earned a best friend for life. He loves quiet moments and gentle affection, but he’s also always up for a fun game of fetch, a joyful romp in the yard, or a walk in the woods. Whether curled up as a professional snuggler on the couch or showing off his quick learning skills in training games, Reggie thrives on praise, connection, and being part of a loving family. He would enjoy a doggy playmate, making him a versatile and easy-going companion once he feels secure. Reggie already has wonderful house manners, is crate-trained, and walks nicely on a leash. A true survivor with a heart full of hope, he’s guaranteed to keep you smiling every day. Reggie’s perfect match is a dog-savvy, patient adopter who understands the power of slow introductions and building trust over time. He would flourish in a calm home without small children, and would do wonderfully in a family with older kids or other dogs. His adopters should be prepared for continued bonding and gentle encouragement, providing him with the stability he needs to thrive. If you cannot adopt but want to help Reggie’s journey, please consider becoming his monthly sponsor. For just $10 a month, you’ll help provide him with the continued care, enrichment, and love he needs while he waits for his forever home. Back Story Regie was found roaming loose in the desert by an animal control officer. He was turned over to a veterinarian for safekeeping, medical care, and adoption. Unfortunately, the opposite happened to Reggie. He spent over a year in the facility before the veterinarian agreed to transfer him and several other of their neglected dogs to our facility. When he arrived, Reggie was 30 pounds underweight, had sores on his forelegs and paws, his ears and eyes were caked with dirt, and he had dog bites on his hind end. He was hand shy, indicating possible physical abuse, and he was out of date for his core vaccines, rabies vaccination, worming, and was not neutered. He was very neglected and abused for over a year in a 4-foot by 6-foot outside pen. His anxiety was very high, and he constantly barked. He lashed out at all dogs out of fear. He was initially shy around people but quickly warmed up once he was treated with kindness. We spent over a year with Reggie rehabilitating him, and he now engages with all new people in a friendly manner, listens attentively, enjoys being rubbed and snuggled, and loves going for walks. He is one of our most stable and wonderful boys here. He still has some issues with going on ‘walkabouts’ if he has the chance. He has returned on his own the three times he went on a solo adventure. He is one of our “bests.” Behavior Profile Reggie is a very friendly boy. We do not know how he will interact with small children. He will more than likely be pleasant, but he is kind of clumsy and will certainly knock smaller ones over. He listens very well. Barks to go out at unfamiliar things, and not much else. He is very friendly with all people and good with all dogs. He enjoys being outside for long times, inside in a crate, or resting on the floor next to the couch. Attribute Definition Loyal Companion Forms a strong, lasting bond with his person. Gentle Calm and soft in interactions. Playful Enjoys toys, games, and fun activities. Affectionate Enjoys cuddles, pets, and human closeness. Intelligent Learns commands and routines quickly. Eager to Please Wants to make his human happy. Good with Dogs Plays well and lives peacefully with other canines. Good with Kids Enjoys being around respectful children. House-Trained Consistently goes potty outside. Resilient Has overcome hardship and adapted well. Comedic Personality Makes people laugh with his quirks and antics. Behavior Challenge Definition Resource Guarding: Protects his food from other dogs. Handling Sensitivity: Dislikes grooming, vet exams, or certain touch. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
