Food Express 3rd Saturday, Modesto - PetSmart 4th Saturday, Roseville - Pet Food Express Please visit the GCGSR Rescue Page for specific address information. Adoption fee: $300 This is an updated biography on our beautiful black and tan female, Joiya. She is roughly 5 years of age with the physical stamina of a much younger dog. This gal initially arrived in our organization as a complete stranger to the indoor life where dog beds, stairs, and human companionship were foreign to her. It was clear she preferred the company of her canine friends over the company of people. However, over the past several months, she has blossomed into a lady who now knows what she enjoys: a calm comfortable home with her human, a view to enjoy the outdoors, and a canine buddy who will share in bouts of play (which is increasing over time!). Joiya continues to be a busy gal driven by curiosity with any activity that pops up, but she will quickly settle in her favorite perches where she will rest quietly during the day. She may appear aloof at times, but she is becoming more joyfully expressive in the comfort and safety of her family. Occasionally, she feels the need to vocalize her opinions to the neighborhood but will respond to corrections quickly, usually with a simple choice to come inside. She greets all humans with a calm demeanor and has learned to appreciate gentle pets and affection from strangers. In the home, she will remain in close proximity to her person to keep you in eye sight, then will calmly wait to escort you to your next task. She seems to take pride in her role as a ‘home social supervisor’. This gal enjoys daily walks where she has learned to ignore distractions along the way. She is housebroken with use of a dog door and enters her crate on her own where she sleeps quietly through the night. If she is not engaging in play with her foster brother (see Oscar), she will often entertain herself with her favorite ball or chew on a Nyla bone on her bed. This is one simple girl who has come a long way and will delight you as she continues to unveil her youthful and grateful spirit. (.gcgsr/dogs.html#levels) Additional Adoption Information For more information and to see when this dog will be attending an Adoption Day, please see our Dogs page on our main website. (.gcgsr/adopt_info.html) We operate within a reasonable driving distance from the Greater Sacramento area, the Central Valley down to Merced, and Lake Tahoe. A reasonable driving distance is determined by where one of our volunteers is willing to drive within our areas of service. That means we don't adopt out of our area, to Southern California, or out of state. Puppy Requirements We have special Requirements for Adopting a Puppy and a separate Puppy Questionnaire that must be completed on puppies. Please see our Requirements for Adopting a Puppy (.gcgsr/puppies.html) email us at infogcgsr for more information. Thank you for visiting!

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
