Please read our Frequently Asked Questions and Adoption Processed Explained documentation. _________ B I O ______________ Name: Ella Pitzgerald Size: ~ Medium, range: 26-60 lbs Adoption Donation: $250 (applicable sales tax included). Adoption fees may be paid by cash or check.  Other: Spayed Female, Vaccinations current, Microchip ** Ella qualifies for our Seniors for Seniors Program. If you qualify and are interested in participating in this program, please fill out an application online and type "SENIOR" after your name. ** Due to a generous donation of heart medications, Ella will be adopted with approximately a 4 month supply of Pimobendan, 6-7 months of Enalapril, and ~1 year supply of Furosemide. Ella has been diagnosed with Dilated cardiomyopathy. She is currently doing very well and her heart has improved with her medications. This condition starts with degeneration of the heart muscle. The muscle becomes thinner and weaker, particularly the normally thick muscular wall of the left ventricle. As the heart weakens, it loses its ability to pump blood effectively. The blood congests in the heart, causing increased pressure, which causes the thin heart muscle walls to stretch. This stretching causes the large, dilated appearance. Some dogs develop a heart murmur if the heart valves become stretched enough to create a leak. Some dogs develop an abnormal heart rhythm because of the stretched heart muscle. Ella requires the following medications to manage this. Enalapril ½ 20mg every 12 hours ($14 per month), Pimobendin ½ 10mg every 12 hours ($97 per month), Lasix 20mg 2 tablets in the morning and 1 tablet in the evening. ($21 per month) we are currently working on decreasing her Lasix because she has been doing so well. This will reduce the monthly cost of this medication, Mucinex ER 1 tab in the morning, this is available over the counter, and Azithromycin ½ 250mg tablet twice a week ($12.50 for 10 tablets, lasts about 2 months). Dilated Cardiomyopathy is progressive and care should be established with a vet right away to continue medications. A cardiac ultrasound would be recommended every 6-12 months as recommended by your primary care veterinarian. Ella Pitzgerald will be legendary in Jazz and in your heart Foster Home Feedback 5/6/25 Foster Home Feedback :Ella has been with us for almost a year!!! When she first came into the rescue, she definitely was not feeling good and it took us a while to get her on the right treatment plan and feeling better. Now that she is on medication, you would never think she has a heart condition!! Ella loves to play with other dogs, go for walks, play with toys, and just loves to be outside in the sun. She is potty trained, crate trained, and overall very well behaved and has good manners. Ella is a dream in the car and loves to go for car rides. We have been working on her walking skills as she is very strong and will pull. With training, she has gotten much better but does need a strong handler. She is so friendly and loves everyone she meets! She will be a great addition and an amazing loving companion. 7/18/24 Foster Feedback: Are you looking for the perfect companion!? Then look no further. Ella is one of the easiest fosters I have ever had. It did not take her long to fit right into our home. She is potty and crate trained. She also does fine left out when we are gone and doesn't get into anything, just curls up on our bed and sleeps. She knows to sit, down, and stay. Don't let that white face fool you, she is younger and spunkier than she looks! She loves to play with my dog, go for walks, and loves to play with toys. She also loves to curl up and have some snuggle time. She loves everyone she meets and seems like a dog that you can take anywhere and she will be up for anything. She has not been around small children or cats while she has been in the rescue. Hurry up and get your application in for this sweet girl! 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
