REVER HOME!!! Come meet Abbott and other great adoptable dogs this Sunday (07/27) from 12-3 pm at the PetSmart in Silver Spring, MD (12020 Cherry Hill Rd, Silver Spring, MD 20904)! Name: Abbott Best Guess for Breed: Chihuahua mix Best Guess for Age: 6 years 8 months as of Apr 2025 Gender: Male Approximate Weight: 17.7 lbs Gets Along With: Abbott does well with other dogs and needs to go to a home with a welcoming resident dog because he is shy. Abbott would do best in a home without kids. We haven’t seen Abbott with cats but we would be happy to discuss integration techniques with any potential adopters. Currently Living At: DC area foster home. Abbott is Looking For: Abbott is a 6-year-old dog with a gentle soul. This handsome boy might start off a little shy, but once he gets to know you, his heart opens up like a beautiful flower. With a bit of patience and love, Abbott will bloom into the loyal and loving companion you’ve been dreaming of. Because of his quiet nature, Abbott would thrive in a calm and understanding home where he can take his time to feel safe and secure. He’s the kind of dog who will appreciate a cozy corner to relax in and a kind hand to remind him he’s truly loved. What My Foster Says About Me: Abbott is getting along beautifully with Gracie. When it's time for walkies, they run to the vestibule and compete for my attention to see who can get their leash put on first. Abbott taps his front paws impatiently and tries to nuzzle in next to Gracie when I'm putting on her leash. He's still shy with me, but he's making a little progress. He'll follow me and be underfoot when I'm walking around the house, but when I'm sitting, he'll lie down some 6 or 7 feet from me. I'll tempt him with a treat and he'll come close enough to take it from an extended hand. If I get on the ground and approach him slowly, he'll let me pet him , and then I can rub his tummy (when he loves, of course, once he lets me do it). In the time he's been with us, he hasn't had any accidents. He sleeps through the night in his crate, and doesn't resist when I put him in. He's walked into it voluntarily only 3 or 4 times in the three weeks he's been with us. I have no concerns about leaving him and Gracie to roam the house while I'm gone. If he senses that I'm just outside the door, he'll bark for a bit, but once I get down the front steps, the barking stops. Heartworm Information: Abbott is heartworm positive, but this Lucky Dog got extra lucky! This pup is part of a groundbreaking study we are conducting at our South Carolina Rescue Campus that has the potential to change the way shelters across the United States treat heartworm positive dogs. All dogs in the study are placed at random in either the 2 shot or 3 shot protocol with strictly monitored protocols in place. Four weeks following their final injection, the pups are eligible to transport to the DC area for placement in foster or adoptive care. After treatment concludes, we work with adopters to arrange a free follow up heartworm test after 6 months, followed by a second test at 9 months. Abbott has completed the treatment and exercise restriction phase, and is awaiting the 6-month follow up test. Lucky Dog cannot guarantee any dog is housebroken. All of our dogs are working on their crate training. TO ADOPT: The adoption fee for this dog is $475, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations, spay/neuter, and heartworm treatment. If you are interested in adopting, please complete the Adoption Questionnaire online at bit.ly/adoptaluckydog Lucky Dog Animal Rescue does our best to provide accurate information about the dogs we have for adoption. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
