Guess for Breed: Shepherd mix Best Guess for Age: 6 years old as of February 2025 SEX: Male Approximate Weight: 36 lbs Gets Along With: Owen gets along with other dogs, with a preference for smaller dogs. He has lived with a cat and would do best with cats who don't want to engage or dog-savvy cats. We are happy to discuss integration techniques with any potential adopters! He needs to be in an adult-only home. Currently Living at: DC area home All about Owen: This sweetie with the utterly adorable up- and down- ear combo arrived into our care as a puppy from Puerto Rico in the spring of 2019. He was quickly adopted out into a loving home and grew up there. As Owen became older, his family started growing as well. His wonderful, loving adopters did everything to ensure Owen felt comfortable in his home as children started coming along. Over time, however, it became apparent that Owen would be happiest in a calm home without children. He's now nearly six years old and while he still enjoys his walkies, he really prefers a calmer and quieter home. Owen is chill in the home. His family crate trained him early on, but does not crate him now and he has proven to be trustworthy in the home. He loves wandering around his fenced-in backyard or simply sitting on the deck, just sniffing the air. He LOVES balls - he loves chasing them and likes doing that in the yard. Overall, though, he's way out of the puppy yips and has that great mellow vibe going on. Owen is a good boy who just needs to be in a calmer, quieter home, and he is fortunate that his loving humans have made the extremely difficult decision to let him go to a home where he can relax and be the best dog he can be. He's a nice size for snuggling - not too big, not too small. What do you say? Can you see him by your side? Lucky Dog cannot guarantee any dog is housebroken. All of our dogs are working on their crate training. TO ADOPT: The adoption fee for this dog is $460, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations and spay/neuter. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
