e has absolutely loved everyone she has met here (from as young as age 2 up to age 80!) and ensures you know it by giving major tail wags and ENDLESS kisses from the moment she meets you. She has the best eye contact of any dog I’ve met and she’ll gladly join in on your conversation with the sweetest listening ears and non-stop shepherd head tilts! Be sure you don’t smile or laugh at her when you see this adorableness though, or she’ll be headed your way for more kisses!!! If you find an extra special place in Ruthie’s heart, she’ll lay upside down along your lap, rest her head on your shoulder and sweetly ask for all the tummy rubs she can get. She is a BIG girl already, so I imagine her as a big ol’ lap dog as she continues to grow❤️ Ruthie is a complete sweetheart, but she is also very independent, SMART and strong-willed. She loves playing with toys, especially the ones that can hide treats inside, and is a pro at figuring out the doggy puzzles we have offered her. She is definitely a more dominant girl who enjoys a challenge and lots of mental stimulation and for this reason, I think she would excel at agility, scent training, obedience, or the like! She is very eager to please and has been a dream to train so far. Ruthie knows basic commands like sit, stay and wait and is also doing great with potty training! When on a schedule, she has very few accidents in the house if any at all. She has been doing fantastic in her crate and will only occasionally whine if she’s missing you. Ruthie has also loved leashed walks around our yard and would LOVE a home who will exercise her daily! Ruthie has not been able to meet with other dogs or animals outside from her littermate just yet, but I think she would excel with lots of socialization and proper introductions, especially with more neutral or submissive dogs. At this time, cats and small animals are unknown! The only thing Ruthie hasn’t liked so far is the dishwasher and the vacuum, but because she loves her people so much, she’s already working hard on being convinced otherwise! With her puppy energy in mind, we are also working on not jumping and the command “off” with which she is getting better every day! In summary, Ruthie is loving, smart, spunky and SASSY in all the very best ways and the sky is definitely the limit for this girl! We know that when she finds her person or people, her heart will just soar! We can’t wait for her new family to love her as much as we do❤️

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
