Boxer Dogs For Adoption in Austin, TX, USA

Dog Breed: Boxer. Hi! My name is Sarge! I am a handsome 8 year old fawn boy that is on the hunt for my forever home after being found as a stray in the Galveston area. I am an 85lb boy with very low e

nergy. I am crate trained, leash trained, and house trained but will have an occasional poop accident in the house if I don't get my daily walk the day before. I prefer to do 'my business' on my walks and keep my yard clean but I will go outside with coaxing and do my business if I must. I prefer to be inside laying around unbothered, so being outside is not my jam! When outside against my wishes, I do not dig, attempt to jump fences/gates, or try to run away. My walks are short and sweet and take 2-3x longer because I move slowly and take my time. There is a 10 year old beagle in my foster home and we do well together with occasional cuddles. I do not play with toys, balls, or people. I am not a fan of water or baths but if I am forced in the tub I will stand there and accept it. I am such a good boy that I am trusted to free roam the house outside of a crate while the humans are working. I will follow humans everywhere and can be considered a Stage 5 Clinger velcro dog. I do not willingly go on couches or beds and basically have to be put on them to cuddle. I have been around a 10 year old high energy human kid and did great and was very tolerant of him hugging and petting me constantly, so my foster mom believes I would do well with older kids that won't require me to play with them. It's unsure if I am cat friendly but I was spunky with a bird outside so I may not be a fan. My foster mom thinks I would do best in a low energy home with older dogs because I do like the company of dogs that aren't interested in playing. Although I look clinically depressed, I love attention! I'm the biggest sweetheart and need all the love and attention! If you are looking for a slow paced, low maintenance, loving guy, contact the rescue today and give them my name because I am waiting to meet you! Sarge IV was named by Cheryl to honor her first rescue boy Sarge

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
