ng!! Meet Monty He is a very handsome 3 year old neutered male that is extremely affectionate and very smart. He learns commands with ease and is very food motivated. He loves to sit and lay down for treats and is learning to take them very softly. He walks wonderful on a leash is un-reactive to anything happening around him. He stays close and is not a puller. He loads wonderful in the car and loves to watch the world go by as you go through town. He adores pup cups and enjoys them with perfect manners. He currently resides with several other dogs both small and large and we think he would do best with medium size and up. He is not always aware of his size. He will NOT do well with cats as they appear to be moving toys, so no cats. He has been to boarding and was a superstar and was great for his first bath ever. It felt so good to have the past scrubbed off. He has overcome so much from being tied up outside with no food or water and shelter dependent on whether his chain was looped around the pole. Monty will require a fenced in yard as we have promised him he will not be tied up ever again. He is shy with new people, but warms up with treats and going slow. He watches his person for cues and wants to please. He will need you to understand that the world to him is a big place and very intimidating. His play style is busy and fun and if someone won't play with him he rolls over makes noise and runs in circles. He loves to wrestle and run! He does not care to play ball, but loves walks and exploring. On the other hand he is a quiet friend that will sit at your feet while you work or drink your coffee in the morning. He is the sweetest most loving boy. His other past time is catching popcorn and treats and he definitely has the eye mouth coordination down. He has good re-call and is learning the fencing system. Monty will need someone to understand that though he is a big dog, he is an even bigger baby. He will need slow introductions to the world in a methodical manner and that re-direction needs to be consistent, fair and and not harsh. He would do best with another solid dog and will need you to be aware that sometimes when he plays, he does not hear the other dog say no. He is learning and is super excited to attend day care this week.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
