NAME: Valentine BREED: Schnauzer/Poodle SEX: male COLOR: gray AGE: 3 yrs as of Feb 2025 WEIGHT: 12 lbs FOSTERED BY: LOCATED IN: NOTES FROM FOSTER FAMILY: Valentine (but better known as Vinnie to his foster mom) is a super sweet boy that is looking for his forever family. Vinnie loves attention and snuggling with his human and would happily hang out on the couch for a Nextflix and chill day! When he came into rescue, he was severely matted which caused some eye issues. He is on daily drops for dry eye and will need to maintain those drops for life. He may have some minor vision impairment due to this but nothing that affects his day to day life and can easily spot lizards in the yard to chase! Here are a few other things his foster mom had to say: *Vinnie did great with me grooming him, used electric clippers & scissors, was also good while bathing *Sleeps through the night on his dog bed. *Potty trained *Loves to go on walks, still working with him, he pulls some, but I am not as fast as him. *He likes to ride in the car, he is in a dog seat and tethered for safety. *He will jump up, in the air or or at the door when he gets excited - like when he knows we are going for a walk or car ride, I correct him with a calm down and stand there till he calms- he is getting a lot better with this. I always go out the door and in before him so he knows he has to wait and I am the pack leader. *He does resource guard some but we are working on that too. He mainly likes to keep toys for himself or the bed he is laying in. He is currently living with another dog but may do better as an only dog due to this issue although he does seem to want to play with another dog and overall is good with other dogs. He may be fine with a dog that leaves his toys/bed alone and takes cues when Vinnie wants to be left alone. *He has great hearing and if he hears something outside he will low growl and low bark. I can tell him all is well and not to bark and he stops. He is not a big barker. Someone rang my doorbell yesterday and he did not bark , I think cause I got right up and told him and my dog to back up away from the door. He is somewhat a scaredy cat if there is something new in the yard or lanai but after a sniff he is fine. *He eats well and does not bother my dog after he finishes and she is still eating. *I think he is a very smart dog but if you don’t let him know you are the alpha in the house he will do what he wants. He is very lovable, pretty much a Velcro dog. I slowly built up the time I would be gone from the house and come back and he has adjusted. I tell him I am leaving but will return and tell him to stay and now he does not come over to the door I am going out. I have one camera in my house and I check on him and he is in one of his beds sleeping when I check on him. *He is not high energy until we go for a walk, car ride, etc. then he gets excited but if we are just hanging out at home he is right by me, generally laying or sitting by me. He could be with an older person or a family, but no young kids. He just wants to be loved and secure! *Thunder does not make him shake but if it is really loud and a lot of it he wants to be right with you or hide under the bed but he does not get crazy scared. NOTE: Local applications are given first priority and some out of town areas will not be able to be processed. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
