r family! TAILS NEEDS A FOREVER HOME!!! Come meet Tails and other great adoptable cats this Sunday (09/21) from 12-3 pm at the PetSmart in Falls Church, VA (6100A Arlington Blvd, Falls Church, VA 22044)! Name: Tails Best Guess for Breed: Lab/Terrier Mix Best Guess for Age: 9 months as of September 2025 SEX: male Estimated Weight (He still has a little more growing to do!): 39 pounds as of 9/7/2025 Gets Along With: Other dogs! We haven't seen him with cats or younger kids but we are happy to discuss integration techniques with any potential adopters! Currently Living at: D.C. area foster home Special Adoption Considerations: Because Tails is shy, he needs to go to a home with a confident, welcoming resident dog who will show him the ropes. Tails is Looking For: Tails came to Lucky Dog as a tiny puppy alongside his brother—who’s since been adopted. Now, this sweet boy is still patiently waiting for his turn to find a home to call his own and create memories. Dog parks are Tails’ happy place! He absolutely loves romping around with other pups, chasing toys, and romping through the grass. After all the excitement, he’s more than happy to curl up for some cozy snuggle time with his people. So you might wonder—why is this fun-loving pup still searching for his forever family? Tails can be shy when meeting new people, but with a bit of patience and a kind heart, his sweet, silly personality begins to shine through. If you have a warm home, a welcoming resident dog, and a little extra love to give, Tails would be so grateful to meet you. All he needs is a chance to show what a truly special boy he is. What My Foster Says About Me: Tails is the perfect mix of playful energy and cozy companionship. Whether he’s zooming around the dog park or curled up beside us for a night of belly rubs and TV, he’s always ready for fun and the cuddles. His happy tail wags so hard it sets his whole butt into a joyful wiggle dance—and yes, it’s as cute as it sounds. He’s got a tiny grandpa snore that'll melt your heart, and he’s a total pro at crate time—sleeping through the night and waking up ready for a day of adventure. Tails loves his time at the dog park with friends, exploring new places, and showing off his zoomies with his doggy friends. Treats (especially peanut butter Kongs and chew bones) are his love language, and he's learning fast thanks to them! Tails knows “sit,” “down,” “come,” and “crate,” and while he’s about 85% reliable, the other 15% is his signature brand of adorable independence. He is still working on his leash manners bit—he’s just so excited to see the world that sometimes his feet move faster than his brain! Tails has been waiting so patiently for the right family—a home where he can take his time to warm up to people, and have a friendly dog buddy to show him the ropes and help him feel at home. TO ADOPT: The adoption fee for this dog is $460, which includes the cost of routine vetting and transport from the shelter. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
