VER HOME!!! Name: Larry Best Guess for Breed: Shepherd/Lab Mix Best Guess for Age: 2.5 years as of September 2025 SEX: Male Approximate Weight: 43 lbs Gets Along With: Other dogs, and he is currently living with a cat, which he just ignores! Currently Living at: DC area foster home Larry is Looking For: This chill dude is looking for a new place to hang out, with family who wants give him some nice walks and rockin' playtime, and are fully prepared to relax with him on the couch when the time comes! He's not too cool for school and would love to learn the ropes with you. Are you the one to vibe with him? What My South Carolina Foster Says About Me: From his foster in South Carolina: "he's an absolute goober! once he got into the groove he really embraced being spoiled and living the high life and hes just the sweetest thing ever. When he hears me waking up in the morning he gets right at the edge of my bed, he wags his tail a bunch just as happy as he can be. He does that every day without fail. Someone's going to get an incredibly good friend." DC foster update: Larry is a gentle, easygoing pup who has blossomed in foster care and is ready to be someone’s loyal best friend. He’s quiet, non-destructive, and sleeps peacefully through the night without a crate. Larry has made great progress in building confidence and now enjoys exploring stores, farmers markets, and busy city streets with a calm, steady presence. He’s discovered how much fun life can be—whether it’s riding in the car, going on long sniffy hikes in the park, or savoring a well-earned pup cup from Starbucks. He gets super excited every time he sees the leash and knows he’s heading out for a walk, making daily outings a joy for both dog and human. Every morning he eagerly waits for his people to wake up and head to the kitchen for breakfast, bouncing with excitement (and sometimes a little bark of joy) when he knows it’s time to eat. Larry also loves to play, especially tug-of-war and a good game of chase, but he’s just as happy to relax and keep you company. After a long day, he’s happiest curling up beside you, offering his loving gaze and resting his head on your lap while you unwind on the couch. Larry gets along wonderfully with other dogs, respecting the space of his senior foster sibling while happily romping with puppies. He adjusts beautifully to the personalities around him. On walks, Larry generally does very well, especially when out with his foster dog friends. Larry is simply looking for a family to share in all the love, adventures, and quiet moments he has to give Lucky Dog cannot guarantee any dog is housebroken. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
