pounds. I have the same name as my foster mom, so my foster parents call me Aurora. I was rescued from an overcrowded shelter, and boy am I happy to be free! My foster parents say I’m just about the sweetest girl ever. I love meeting new people and giving them kisses. I’m gentle, affectionate, and appreciative. Sometimes I jump up to give hugs, so you would need to watch me with little kiddos; that way I don’t accidentally knock them over. I have met many dogs of all sizes and loved them all! I like to play for short bursts and can entertain myself if my furry friends aren’t feeling active. I’ve had a small amount of exposure to cats and did just fine with them. My foster parents are impressed with my training so far! I like to lay in the kennel for naps and don’t mind sleeping in there at night. If I’m in a playful mood and have to be kenneled when you leave the house, I may bark for a little bit. My foster parents let me sleep in bed with them and I don’t make a peep all night. I am potty and leash-trained! Going on walks is a lot of fun and I especially like looking at the squirrels. Did I mention that I love toys? Stuffed animals are my favorite thing to chew on! My future family should know that I have bilateral hip dysplasia. The vet said I don’t need surgery right now, but it’s a real possibility when I’m older. For me to stay healthy, my family should commit to the following: 1) keeping me lean and active with low-impact exercise such as swimming or walks, 2) getting me on a prescription mobility diet such as Hill’s j/d, and 3) giving me a joint supplement like Dasuqin. My foster mom can give you more info! I know that sounds like a lot of work, but I promise I’ll make it worth your while. I’m an easy girl to love with my honey eyes and gentle soul. I can’t wait to find my forever home! Adoption fee includes: Full veterinary exam, Alter, Prepaid microchip, Dewormed, Rabies vaccine (if age appropriate), Distemper combo vaccine(s) appropriate to age, Bordetella vaccine, 4DX (over 6 months of age), Flea/tick and heartworm preventative while in rescue. Adoption fee: $275.00

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
