py to be on the journey to my new family and new life. I’ve been getting lots of great care from the volunteers, and now they say I am ready to find a home of my very own, so let’s meet soon! I came in heartworm positive but have received my treatment and am getting back to my regular exercise routine now. • OTHER DOGS/CATS/KIDS: No dogs in my new home as I am reactive when they come near me. / Cats unknown. / I met a nice boy and a girl around 10 years old at Mostly Mutts and liked them, so a home with kids ages 10 and up could be a good fit for me. Let’s meet! • PERSONALITY/ENERGY LEVEL: I’m a fun and playful guy who the volunteers say is as smart as I am handsome. I bet you will think so, too! I am a people dog who is very sociable and friendly with the people I’ve met. You are sure to love my sweet nature. / My energy level is 4-6. • SKILLS/CRATE/POTTY: I am a student in the Mostly Mutts University training program, where I am learning lots of great commands with my trainer. So far, I have mastered the ‘sit’, ‘down’, ‘leave it’, and ‘stay’ commands. I walk nicely on a leash, and I also know the fun command, ‘paw’! Check back soon to see what else I have learned. / My crate manners are good at Mostly Mutts, though I sometimes don’t want to go back in after spending time with the volunteers. / My potty habits have been pretty good at the shelter, where I've had just a few accidents on the shelter schedule. Please continue to be consistent with me on a good schedule, so I can master my potty skills. • LIKES/DISLIKES: I love spending time with people, and my favorite time of the day is when the volunteers leash me up for a nice walk. They are never long enough – lol – and I always want to walk some more, so that I can spend as much time as possible with the volunteers! I love to give kisses and show off my beautiful smile, as well as sit on the bench in front of the shelter and get some belly rubs. I also enjoy playing with toys, and I especially like the stuffed ones and Nylabones. A volunteer recently took me on a day trip to Mostly Mutts Market, where I barked at my reflection in the mirror (LOL) and dove directly into the basket of toys! Let’s make time for some nice walks and play sessions together. / I can’t think of any dislikes except I’d rather be in a home than at the shelter. I’m also sure I wouldn’t like it if I didn’t get enough love, attention, and training. • MEDICAL: I'm current on annual vaccinations, micro-chipped and neutered. I have completed my heartworm treatment and rest period, and I am ready to get back into a regular exercise routine. Local adoption would still be best for my heartworm re-check in late October. I have mild tartar on my teeth, so my adoptive family should consult with their vet and consider a dental cleaning in the future. I’m taking an inexpensive anxiety medication for shelter stress – just ask about that. I am looking for a wonderful home with a loving family! My adoption fee is $299.00, and I’m located in Kennesaw, Ga.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
