ust under 3 months old. Both pups were adopted together on October 20th, but sadly returned to the rescue on March 31st, 2025. Her brother has since been adopted and this sweet, loving affectionate girl is still waiting for her forever family. AVERY thought she had found her forever family on 13th September, but just 10 hours after taking her home, the rescue received a text message - at 11.30pm at night stating "Well looks like we have to bring Avery back when my husband gets home from work tomorrow it's way to overwhelming she won't leave the cat alone she fights us when she don't want to come in she is digging the couch scratching at the door when we take her outside she don't go to the bathroom and fights you cause she don't want to come in she pulls us so hard and does not listen". End quote! This poor dog was not given a chance, she was over-stimulated from being in the kennels for 6 months and excited to have all these new smells, new environment and everything else. I had recommended she be allowed to have a good run, or a long walk to help burn off some of the pent up kennel energy - this clearly didn't happen. Simple solutions for the issues the family had within the first 10 hours of taking a new dog home.... Digging on the couch - do not let her on the coach Chasing the cat - have the cat in a different room, put leash on the dog, put dog in crate. Family was made aware that her first home when she was a puppy she chased cats (also noted on her bio), so this should have been expected and planned for, she is not wanting to kill the cats, just needs to learn not to chase. Scratching at the door - don't let her near the door, keep her on a leash until she learns her new home rules. Doesn't do her business when you take her out - most likely not needing to do any business since she has only been in this new home for 10 hours or so and all is new and exciting and no routine yet. Fights when doesn't want to come in - presume this means pulls back on the leash - she is in a strange place, with strange people - be gentle, caring, affectionate, encourage her gentle, motivate her to want to come in and feel safe. Pulls so hard - most likely fear from being with strange people in a strange place for only around 10 hours, be gentle, caring, affectionate and understanding so she feels safe and wanted. Avery is a 40 pound dog, she is incredibly responsive of course when over stimulated you go slow to get her attention. She is not a super strong dog and the family were not weak and feeble and spent time with her before they confirmed they wanted to adopt her. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
