r smart and fun to work with and teach. I came into a local impound shortly after having puppies and was initially very scared and shut down. Slowly I started to trust new people and was very happy to show off my favorite trick, "shake," for treats. I warmed up quickly to new people, and would get so excited and wiggly to see them. I have been a little cautious meeting new people in my foster home, but warm up after a few treats. In my foster home I have done well with the residents dogs and will play a nice game of chase and then do my own thing when play time is over. That being said I would be perfectly content as an only dog, and because I can be barrier reactive, slow introductions with resident pets is highly advised. I go nicely in my crate at night and when my foster mom is at work, and am generally quiet, unless I hear a lot of commotion in the home. While I have had very few accidents in the house, I do sometimes urinate in my kennel, so we are working through that. I love toy and playing and enjoy a game of fetch, and am working on dropping the ball so the game can continue. I am working on leash walking, and can be good on the leash, but I do tend to get distracted by people and dogs, and want to bark. Sometimes the sounds and sights on walks are a bit too much, so I turn around and race home for my foster home. I would prefer a fenced in yard or a quieter walking place without a ton of distractions. I am a sensitive gal! In terms of training, I do know sit, shake, spin, lay, roll over, touch, stand (on my hind legs) and crawl, and love showing off my skills. I am an incredibly fast learner with new tricks and I find training time to be so much fun. I heard that the AKC even has trick dog competitions and I think that could be super fun! I have also done super well with being bathed and getting my nails trimmed. My foster mom has noticed that I sometimes get pretty into watching "shadow TV," ie shadows on walls, so we are working on other options for me to expend my energy. My new family should know that I should not be exposed to a laser pointer or encouraged to chase lights, because they get pretty exciting and overwhelming for me. I am over all a moderate-low energy gal. I am happy to follow my person around and then I will have short bursts of higher energy where I get the zoomies. I am a really fun girl and will give you plenty of amusement and love. Jazz is from a local impound. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
