of months and appeared to not be able to be handled much by humans. There was something about trying to eat the vet. But one person at the shelter worked really hard to gain her trust and was able to handle her. We decided to get her out of the shelter to see how she did in a less stressful environment. We got her home and she appeared to have zero redeeming qualities. She is kind of cute, but she spent most of her time biting at our shoes and picking fights with our bigger dogs, especially when there was food involved. There was some discussion about whether we could ever adopt her out. I give every dog a chance, so I drugged her so we could handle her to do a dental, spay, and remove 6 mammary tumors. Over a thousand dollars later, Hazel came home a new woman. Overnight, she stopped being mean (for the most part). She stopped snapping and doing most of her crabby behavior. It turns out she was in pain---her teeth weren’t even that bad. I don’t know what exactly happened or felt better, but she is a (mostly) changed woman. Hazel now follows me everywhere (she prefers women to men), cuddles in bed, and doesn’t try to eat our feet anymore. She does still start crap with other dogs if there is food involved; some things never change. So let me tell you about Hazel 2.0 She really likes food, and she will protect people food with her life. She loves to meander around the yard and I think would be fine off leash as long as you had a way to recall her---she’s mostly deaf. She will cuddle and she is happy to just hang out. She will bark when she’s “abandoned” ie not on the same side of the door as you. She’s an old lady who has had a rough life. I think she’d LOVE to be an only dog or with a dog who never gets near her food. Hazel is ready to go home. She had a home once and someone abandoned her. She’d love a place to lie in the sun and nap. If you’re interested in adopting Hazel, she’s all of ten pounds, but you’ll need to sedate her to get her groomed or go to the vet (I’m no shady used car salesman---I put it all out there). Her breed? When she first arrived we would have made jokes about her being The Devil’s Spawn, but now that she’s feeling better we think maybe a little dachshund, some jack russell, and some chihuahua. Maybe some rat terrier or heeler in there. She is a mix of ALL the small dogs with bad attitudes Hazel is somewhere around 11 years old. She’s currently in Charlottesville, VA, but is willing to travel to get out of her foster home, where she claims the accomodations are sub-par. Hurry and adopt her today before someone else does!I Oh, and she prefers to go to the bathroom outside but is great about using pee pads if necessary.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
