dy to find an active home where adventure is part of the everyday routine. Whether it’s hiking through the woods, going for a jog, or hopping in the car for a road trip, Dallas is the kind of dog who wants to be by your side and involved in all the action. He thrives on activity and would do best with someone who can match his energy and is excited to include him in life’s daily adventures. Right now, he’s walking two miles twice a day and loving every minute of it. Dallas has the attitude of a classic teenager—he’s got opinions, and if you tell him no, he might just talk back. But don’t be fooled by the sass; this boy has a soft spot for string cheese and will work for it with surprising enthusiasm. He’s also incredibly gentle when taking treats, sometimes so much so that you’ll have to help him out a bit by putting it right into his mouth. When it comes to other animals, Dallas shines. He does well with other dogs and would love to have canine siblings to play with. He can live with cats, too, especially the ones who don’t mind a little playful energy. If they’re not interested in being buddies, Dallas is respectful enough to back off and simply coexist. He does get vocal when new people walk through the door, especially if they’re strangers to him. But if they don’t make a big deal out of it and give him some time and reassurance, he settles down. He’s been great with children, showing no discomfort even around toddlers, though his excitement can come through in the form of jumping and playful mouthing. For that reason, an older kid home may be the best match for him. Dallas is fully house-trained, crate-trained, and has completed a four-week basic obedience course. He even comes with a lifetime training membership through Harvard K9. He walks well on a leash, although he might bark or get a little too excited if a big dog passes by. He’s learning to be more confident in social settings, and his foster family is doing a fantastic job getting him out into the world. He’s recently been visiting stores where, with a bit of patience, he now allows people to approach and pet him once he feels comfortable. Because he’s still a young dog, Dallas needs a strong, steady adopter who can keep guiding him through his teenage stage and continue the great progress he's already making. He’s alert and vocal, making him a good little watchdog, but his energy and barking mean that apartment life probably wouldn’t be the best fit. He’d love a yard for zoomies and a home filled with fun, structure, and love. Dallas is a fantastic dog with so much potential. He’s funny, smart, affectionate, and eager to grow into the best version of himself. If you think you can offer him the life he deserves, we’d love to hear from you. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
