ure Best Friend! Oakley is a gentle, sweet-natured pup who’s searching for a patient, loving family to help him blossom. His foster family has gotten to know him even better, and guess what? He’s even more adorable than we thought! Read on to see if Oakley is your perfect match. A Loving, Gentle Soul Oakley is pure sweetness—he doesn’t have a mean bone in his body! He’s submissive with other dogs, friendly with both males and females, and learning to play. He’s eager to please and absolutely thrives on love and encouragement. Bonus: He’s become a total Mama’s boy in his foster home, happily following his person around the house like a loyal shadow. Dog-Friendly & Learning to Play Oakley loves the company of other dogs and would do best in a home with a confident canine buddy. He enjoys wrestling with his foster brother and is discovering the fun of toys and bones (even though squeaky toys are still a little suspicious!). If he gets bored, he can get into a little mischief, so keeping him busy and active is important for this curious boy! Leash Life & Outdoor Adventures ‍ Oakley is wonderful on a leash! He’s gentle, doesn't pull, and loves to take his time—meandering, sniffing, and sometimes plopping down for a little grass break mid-walk. He’s definitely more of a casual stroller than a running buddy. New sights and sounds can still make him nervous, but his confidence is growing every day. Timid but Sweet with People ‍‍ Oakley needs time and patience to warm up, especially with men. While he’s bonded closely with his foster mom, he can be unsure and he tends to retreat to his crate or bark when unfamiliar visitors arrive. Good news: If a man became Oakley’s primary caregiver, he could absolutely bond in time! He just needs patience and understanding. Crate & Potty Training Pro This sweet boy is fully potty trained and sleeps quietly through the night. Even cuter: while he’s out of the crate during the day now, Oakley chooses to nap and sleep in his crate with the door open. It’s his little safe haven! Foodie at Heart Oakley is highly food-motivated and takes treats very gently. He’s still getting the hang of what to do with chew bones, but he’s enthusiastic about learning! What Oakley Needs Most A patient, loving home A confident dog buddy A fenced yard A quieter environment with older, respectful kids A family that understands his shy side and will celebrate his sweet victories With time, love, and stability, Oakley will reward you with unmatched loyalty and gentle affection. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
