Ambrose is ready for his forever Foster Home Feedback ** Not Apartment Friendly ** Older, Considerate Children 6/9/25 Foster Feedback:Ambrose is a gentle, calm senior dog who only wants a comfortable couch to lay on for his time away from me. He’s dog and cat friendly, and does well free-roaming inside the house—he is not kennel trained. While he's potty trained, he may have the occasional accident, especially if left with too much water while you're away. Limiting his water during those times has really helped. He would do best in a female-only home (no apartments, please). 6/4/25 Foster Feedback: Ambrose is looking for a female-only home while he continues to work through his reactivity and fear-based aggression toward men. His foster family is helping him build confidence and feel safe around men. So for right now, it will be safer for Ambrose to be in a no male household. If you're a woman looking to give a loving pup a second chance, he might be your perfect match. With time, love, and continued support, Ambrose has so much potential to become your most loyal companion. 5/18/25 Foster Feedback: This sweet boy is really starting to come out of his shell! I've noticed he gains a lot of confidence when he has another dog around — he follows their lead, especially when it comes to going potty outside, which has helped reduce indoor accidents. Speaking of accidents, Ambrose is doing much better while I’m away. Limiting his water intake during those times has made a big difference in helping him with not having inside accidents. He’s also starting to show more interest in toys, which is a great sign that he’s feeling more comfortable. Ambrose is still a bit nervous outside the safety of the yard, but we’re working on slowly building his confidence in new environments. Because he tends to bark at small sounds, apartment living likely isn’t the best fit for him — a quieter home with some space would be ideal. Overall, he’s making steady progress and will thrive with a patient adopter who can continue helping him gain trust and confidence. 4/14/25 Foster Feedback: If you are looking for a couch potato, look no further! Ambrose is dog friendly, cat friendly, and tolerable with kids. Living with small kids (5 and under) makes him nervous with their fast movements. However, if they come for a short visit, he is very good with them. He does well with other dogs but will let them know when they are becoming too much. Ambrose can show some food guarding (barks and growls when a dog comes close to a food dish), so feeding the dogs separately is ideal. Ambrose is potty trained, but can be very stubborn when going outside. Therefore, he does have an occasional accident mainly when I’m at work. The world outside my property is scary for Ambrose, so we are working on building up his confidence while on the leash. He isn’t crate trained yet, but does well free roaming. Ambrose mainly sleeps on the couch or in his spot in my room. Ambrose has been the best house guest while he’s been with me. He loves belly rubs and having his butt scratched. He has such a kind personality and permanent puppy eyes, that are to die for. Ambrose will make you fall in love with him! 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
