FOREVER HOME!!!! Come meet Allie and other great adoptable dogs this Sunday (06/29) from 12-3 pm at the PetSmart in Alexandria, (3351 Richmond Highway Alexandria, VA 22305)! Name: Allie Best Guess for Breed: Shepherd mix Best Guess for Age: 6 years as of April 2025 SEX: Female Approximate Weight: 44 lbs Gets Along With: Allie is great with other dogs and needs to go to a home with a welcoming resident dog. She has lived with a child from ages 7-11. She hasn't been seen with cats but we are happy to discuss integration techniques with any potential adopters. Currently Living at: DC area foster home All about Allie: Allie first came into our care as a young puppy in 2019 and was quickly adopted into a loving home. Her previous family gave her a wonderful life, and their love for her has never wavered. Now, through no fault of anyone, she’s looking for her next forever home. At around six years old, Allie may be past the puppy stage, but don’t let her age fool you—she’s still bursting with energy and zest for life! She’s an active, sporty girl who thrives on daily outings to the dog park, hikes, backyard games of tag, and even joining in on family runs. She’s always ready for her next adventure. Allie would do best in a quieter neighborhood, as loud city noises and busses can stress her out. She can be a little wary of strangers at first, but once she warms up, her loving and friendly personality shines through. She’s also extremely dog-social and absolutely thrives in the company of other dogs. Allie loves attending doggie daycare and meeting new pups at the park. A confident, friendly resident dog in her new home would be a huge plus—not just as a playmate, but also to help build her confidence. Allie is a sweet, affectionate girl with a tender heart. She’s looking for a place where she can feel safe and loved—where she truly belongs. Are you ready to be the next chapter in Allie’s story? Maybe she’s the one your home—and heart—have been waiting for. What My Foster Says About Me: Allie was quite shy and reserved when she first arrived. She’s getting bolder every day and is starting to show her personality a lot more so I’m happy to share more about her as I learn more. So far she seems to LOVE cuddles. She doesn’t seem very interested in toys but she does love bones and yak chews a lot. She has shown no possessive behavior over food or toys or even the bones so far and gets along with my dog great at home. Lucky Dog cannot guarantee any dog is housebroken. All of our dogs are working on their crate training. TO ADOPT: The adoption fee for this dog is $460, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations and spay/neuter. If you are interested in adopting, please complete the Adoption Questionnaire online at bit.ly/adoptaluckydog . 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
