Meet Butter Pecan, a stunning 2 1/2 year old shepherd mix with a big heart and even bigger smarts. She’s still figuring out the world around her, but with the right family, she’s going to absolutely thrive. Personality & Temperament Butter Pecan is a classic shepherd—alert, thoughtful, and independent, but incredibly loving with her people. She may be cautious when faced with new situations or strangers, but once she knows she’s safe, she warms up quickly. She’s not one to be in your lap all the time, but she loves to be close and involved in whatever you’re doing. Training & Behavior This girl is wicked smart. In just a few weeks, she picked up verbal commands, hand signals, and respectful house manners. She knows her boundaries (like staying out of certain rooms or waiting patiently during mealtimes), and she listens exceptionally well to a calm, confident leader. She's not food- or toy-aggressive, waits politely for meals, and you can take a toy from her without a fuss. She’s housebroken, rides well in the car, respects routines, and is even patient when it’s time to towel off muddy paws. While she doesn’t love the crate, she’s familiar with it and could be reintroduced with a bit of time and patience. Activity Level & Ideal Environment Butter Pecan has a moderate-to-high energy level and needs regular exercise and mental stimulation. She enjoys tug-of-war, chasing toys, and zooming around the house—and she’ll definitely thrive with a fenced yard where she can stretch her legs and enjoy the outdoors. She’s walked on leash four times a day and does well with a Martingale collar, although she’ll need some guidance when squirrels, deer, or big trucks catch her eye. She’s not suited for apartment life or long hours alone. She’s still working through separation anxiety and would do best in a home where someone is around more often than not, especially during the adjustment period. Other Pets & People Butter Pecan currently lives with a cat and is learning to coexist, though she still needs occasional reminders to “leave it.” She’s met young children and handled it well, showing gentleness and patience. When it comes to other dogs, she’s a bit of a wild card—she’s barky and reactive on leash, but in a rare off-leash moment, she approached another dog calmly. Continued training and controlled exposure would help her grow more confident in this area. Why You'll Love Her She’s beautiful, low-maintenance in the home, and deeply respectful once she trusts you. She’s not demanding, doesn’t beg, doesn’t have accidents, and understands the household rhythm. She’ll lie in the sun at your feet while you read a book or hang on the porch, soaking up the day. She's also young, healthy, and ready to be someone’s long-term companion. Bonus: She respects boundaries and routines Loves belly rubs and hanging out with her people Excellent with toys and a strong chewer (Kongs and ropes are her jam) Physically stunning—she turns heads with her sleek coat and Belgian Malinois-style looks The perfect mid-size at 50 lbs Butter Pecan isn’t just a dog—she’s a partner and a deeply rewarding best friend in the making. With structure, patience, and love, she’s going to become something truly special. If you're looking for a loyal, smart, and stunning pup to grow with, come meet her—you just might be her perfect match. EVERY DOG HAS A STORY: Butter Pecan and her puppies were found as strays. BFPA was happy to admit them. All her cute puppies have been adopter. So now it is her turn to find her forever home. Some of the information contained in this biography includes approximations based on our expertise and is not guaranteed. Applicants should live no further than one hour from Cary NC as our dogs must be seen by a BFPA veterinarian for all medical care prior to adoptions being finalized. Our foster guardians deliver dogs to their new homes for adoption trials and we do home visits to finalize all adoptions. We therefore prefer applicants that live within an hours drive of Cary NC. For the perfect home, we would consider a little further away. INTERESTED IN ADOPTING BUTTER PECAN? 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
