loves to sleep. Protects his people and is loyal to his family. Just wants to please his owners and will do tricks simply for praise and belly rubs! He likes to try and melt into your arms and snuggle as close to you as he can! If we didn’t have 2 dogs already Otis wouldn’t be going anywhere. He is a dream dog and with a little patience will be your best friend forever.” ✅ Dog friendly ✅ Cat friendly ✅ reptile friendly Otis has good communication skills with other dogs. He does not react to the small and quick reptiles in his foster home He is not a fan of small children and their quick movements! Would prefer older and more considerate and dog savvy kids. Still a puppy so runs FAST and still getting used to those long limbs He is very wary of strangers but takes about 5 minutes to warm up. He is better if the introduction is done sitting as he doesn’t love people standing over him. He is wary of men and prefers women (makes sense as his rescuers were two women ) Any prospective family will need to continue his training and slow introductions. Otis had a very scary beginning and will require his family to stay on top of his training and structure and routine Crate and house trained ✅ and knows the following commands: He knows his name, come, sit, wait, knows lay down, down(get off or down), and leave it Almost entirely leash trained! He does well when focused on his handler, he still pulls occasionally but he is walked with another dog and it’s not hard to manage. He will bark at other dogs if not kept in line! Otis currently sleeps in a crate but he would LOVE to cuddle up to his family in bed or will accept some snuggles on the couch When left alone Otis stays in the crate, he is very smart and has escaped if left unsecured! Otis is not a fan of the car and gets car sick Otis LOVES his bones Otis has exhibited no resource guarding behaviour including with his toys, food or treats Otis is high energy with an off switch. If you want to play fetch in the yard or just cuddle he is ready for either Visit our website to apply .hankshaven.ca/info/adoption

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
