a heart full of love. His soulful eyes are impossible not to fall for. He’s a cuddly guy, and happiest just being near his person—whether that’s relaxing on the couch or quietly keeping you company as you do your weekend chores. He’s calm when you are near, but may get a little anxious if he thinks he’s being left. With time and patience, Kermit will hopefully gain trust to know he’s safe and loved. Because of his lovely long coat, Kermit will need regular grooming to keep him looking and feeling his best. But he’s worth every snip and brush—just wait until you see that post-grooming strut! Kermit is looking for a peaceful, loving home where he can enjoy his golden years surrounded by kindness, care, and companionship. If you’ve got a cozy spot in your heart (and your home), Kermit is ready to fill it. Kermit is currently living with a torn cruciate ligament, which means he takes daily medication to help keep him comfortable and happy. While it slows him down a bit, he still enjoys short strolls and plenty of cuddle time and he loves a good soft squeaky toy. In fact, he’s feeling better already and is showing signs of keeping up with dogs half his age. His ideal home might be a quieter one—maybe with a soft bed, a kind human (or two), and a patient heart ready to help him heal. *This animal is a part of our “Seniors for Seniors” program where we offer senior adopters an opportunity to adopt an eligible pet at a discounted fee.* Adopting a senior dog is like getting a vintage car – it comes with character, a few extra quirks, and might need a bit more maintenance. Expect occasional tune ups at the vet for oil changes (aka meds), and embrace the fact that those 'normal lumps and bumps' are just part of the well-earned charm package! Ruff Start will share all known health information with adopters and recommendations to keep your senior dog in top shape. Kermit is from Texas. If you are interested in getting to know this animal better, please fill out an adoption application. An adoption application is the best way to show your interest in an animal and is not a binding contract. To learn more about Ruff Start’s adoption process and the care our foster animals receive, please visit our How to Adopt page. If you are unable to adopt but want to help this animal and others in our care, you can donate to support the medical and veterinary needs of all Ruff Start Rescue animals.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
