iring about me as that’s the name all of my records are under.) I had a wonderful home with a great family for 3 years, but unfortunately our home was destroyed by a hurricane, and I had nowhere to go, so Mostly Mutts was happy to take me back. (You see I was with them before I was adopted after being picked up by animal control, terribly malnourished and missing half the fur on my body.) I had a very rough start in life, but thankfully was nursed back to good health. I’m looking for a calm and quiet-natured, dog savvy family that will follow the guidelines established by MM to be successful, as I’m fearful of all things new, loud, too busy, and people coming into my home. I was adopted again, but the guidelines weren’t followed, so there was a bite. This is completely avoidable, and MM will be happy to help you with this. I don’t require many walks or a lot of activity as I most enjoy being inside with my people, though I must have a secure fenced yard to romp around in a bit with my family and of course to go to the bathroom. I’m currently in the prison/foster training program off-site and learning a lot! Please inquire at 770-272-6888 to find out when I'm available to meet. • OTHER DOGS/CATS/KIDS: I want to be your only pet as I’ve shown avoidance behavior when meeting other dogs, growling, and trying to get away. My former family also says that I’d be best as an only pet. / No cats please. / My former family reported that I did best with older kids who are dog savvy, so if you have kids like this that are also calm and 15+ years old, let’s meet with my trainer and see how we do together. • PERSONALITY/ENERGY LEVEL: Due to my start in life, I am cautious and fearful of new people and anything new in general. In my former home, I liked to pick a ‘safe spot’ to hang out which was also somewhere close to my person. If I’m afraid of something, I’ll try to retreat to my safe space. My former family found that if you ignore me, I’ll usually come back out on my own once I know I’m safe. I’m a 1- or 2-person kind of dog and I do have a curious nature and may get into things that aren’t mine a bit. I am a huge flight risk due to fear initially, so please don’t let me outside, except in my secure fenced yard and I’ll likely want you to come with me initially. I am not a first-time dog type of dog, but once I know I’m safe, I’m very friendly, loving and sweet and I love my family a lot! / My former family reported that my energy level was around 3–5 with spurts of running zoomies in our yard. • SKILLS/CRATE/POTTY: In my former home I knew the statements ‘bedtime’, ‘nite nite’, and “it’s OK” which was used when I wasn’t sure about something or after I alerted to a noise or stranger. I love treats of any kind, so I’m sure you can teach me lots more as well as use treats to help me get used to new people and new things. I’m a student in the Mostly Mutts University training program now and so far I know the ‘sit’, ‘stay’, ‘come’, ‘down’ and ‘leave it’ commands. I look forward to learning a lot with my trainer more who I already love! / I’m doing well in my crate in the prison/foster training program. In my former home, when my people were away sometimes, I would nap in a darker part of the home. / My potty manners were good in my former home and have been good at MM, too. At first, I liked a family member to come outside with me in our yard, so I’ll likely want that in my new home, too. Funny thing about me is that I’m treat trained – and my former family said that I will train you to let me out just for the treat – lol. • LIKES/DISLIKES: I like knowing I’m safe and cared for. I also like lots of soft blankets and I must have a nice quiet fenced yard for playtime. Chew bones are like pacifiers to me, and I love them a lot - they soothe me and prevented undesirable chewing in my former home. Some of my favorites were the Hartz chew and clean bones. I also like balls and sometimes playing ball. After dinner I like a little treat and a chew bone to settle in for the night. / I am frightened by new things, noises, and people so I’m looking for a quiet retreat type home without many visitors. I also wouldn’t like it if I didn’t get enough love, attention, and training, or if I was rushed into new situations. • MEDICAL: I'm current on my immunizations, micro-chipped and neutered. I’ve just started on an inexpensive anxiety medication called Fluoxetine to help me adjust. I’m looking for a calm, patient, loving and quiet-natured family that will slowly expose me to new things and that will love me furever! My adoption fee is $299.00, and I’m located in Kennesaw, Ga.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
