er elegant, statuesque frame lies the soft spirit of a dog who has weathered a difficult start and is now learning what it means to be safe, loved, and truly at home. She’s a timid girl, slow to trust but deeply affectionate once she knows you’re her person. With time, patience, and kindness, Shelby transforms into a loyal shadow who follows you everywhere, leans in for love, and headbutts gently to remind you it’s time for walkies or just some extra snuggles.
She came from an abusive background and needs a soft place to land — ideally with a woman as her primary person and a calm, friendly dog companion to help guide her. She’s especially bonded with her foster’s two-year-old granddaughter and gets along well with cats and other dogs, including the foster’s German Shepherd. Shelby even enjoys camping trips and hiking adventures, especially when followed by her favorite treat: a bowl of ice water or a cheese cube or two.
Shelby is fully house-trained, non-destructive, and while she was once crate-trained, she no longer needs one. She sleeps on a fuzzy bed next to her foster mom’s side of the bed and will let you know when it's time to go outside. She’s quiet indoors but will alert you if someone comes to the door. She walks well on a leash, enjoys car rides, and never wants to be left behind when it's time to hit the park. Her favorite game? Chasing her foster sister’s remote control car — a surprising burst of playfulness that shows her silly, clownish side.
She does need a calm and structured home. New people and places still scare her, and she will bark or hide when overwhelmed. Gentle introductions, patient training, and consistency are key. A kind man in the home may be accepted if he is extremely patient and willing to go slow, as it took several months for Shelby to trust her foster dad.
Shelby is a diamond in the rough, slowly but surely polishing into a sparkling companion. With the right home — one with love, understanding, and another dog buddy — Shelby will thrive and reward you with her quiet loyalty, her goofy grin, and her heart of gold.
