UTHERN TOM-BELLE. I was rescued from a high kill shelter in Texas having been surrendered for NO GOOD REASON. I'm a sweet girl but I'm a little wary of new people/strangers and can be a bit snarky if you come on too strong... so you gotta go slow with me and let me warm up to you... if you come with a cheeseburger I'm your best friend. I had a rough life in TX and was left out in the yard alot and some folks weren't so nice to me down there.. but once I get to know you, I'm right by your side and a BIG LOVING CUDDLEBUG. I love to snuggle on the couch right next to you while you're watching TV. I know basic commands but am always up to learn more because I'm a smart girl and a quick learner. I love having a job, whether it’s working on new tricks or playing with toys and solving puzzles. I'm an expert fetcher and would love to fetch to my hearts content. I'm still getting used to walking on a leash because I was never walked when I was in TX so need some more leash training. I'm very well behaved in the home, I don't jump up on furniture without being invited up, don't beg or whine for food or go after human food, and am good at keeping myself entertained and don't have separation anxiety. I am fully house trained and crate trained (and will often go there for naps and is happy to spend the night there as well). I'm ok with other dogs in passing but if they get to close too fast I may snap at them. I don't like to share my humans so I should be an ONLY DOG and I've never lived with a cat but I did like to chase them in the yard in TX so NO CATS. Also since I'm not immediately fond of strangers, it's best if I were in an ADULT ONLY home. I would do best in a QUIET HOME with not alot of distractions.. city life in my foster home has been interesting but I'm a southern girl at heart, so a home in the suburbs would be best for me. I'm looking for someone or a couple that will take the time to build a relationship with me and I will reward them with ULTIMATE LOVE AND LOYALTY. I'm a sweet girl with that tough Texas spirit and ready to rock with you. For more info and application - please email: INFOTAILSOFLOVERESCUE.ORG

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
