dogs are absolute sweethearts. Sky loves to snuggle and loves to curl up with anyone and everyone. Fleur will be close by. They like to snuggle in the bed at night. Sky doesn't seem to care for toys much. She'd prefer just to snuggle. Fleur likes squeaky stuffy toys and balls and rubber squeakies. She will fetch. They do play with each other as well. They probably would be best with older kids because they're a little reckless when playing and will both lay on top of my kid and squish him a bit when they lay down on the couch or bed. They are gentle when taking treats. They do not show food or toy aggression but Sky has nipped if she thinks my kid is being too wild or getting too close to the person she's snuggling with. Fleur will finish her food and try and eat Sky's too if you don't watch her but sky doesn't seem to care. They're not trustworthy to be left free roaming. We have been crating them when leaving. Even when we are home they get caught eating random things and counter surfing. Fleur climbs on outside furniture (tables and the ac unit). Fleur seems to be potty-trained but Sky is not and frequently poops in the house even if she just went out an hour ago. Especially at night. Both have been great meeting strangers who came to visit including kids. Both have good leash skills and were easy to walk except when fleur saw another dog she went on alert. We have not tried them with other dogs since we have had them. SKY FKA SPLITTY - 1-5 years old, 50 pounds, needs time to warm up to you, seems dog social FLEUR - 1-5 years old, 40 pounds, dog tolerant, needs time to warm up to you With her black face literally split by a white thick line, newly named SPLITTY arrived as a stray with her doggie companion, FLEUR. Both have been very nervous behind the cage bars but are finally allowing us to meet them to show their true personalities. SPLITTY is the more confident of the two, approaching me in the yard, sniffing and then pretty much that was it! She would lean into me waiting for pets and attention. FLEUR, on the other hand, is taking longer to feel comfortable. She approached for sniffing but would back off even if I just turned to look at her. They both seemed more comfortable with the other respectful dogs in playgroup. SPLITTY seemed to tolerate the other dogs much more. She was pretty popular among several of the male dogs. FLEUR definitely was more nervous and anything more than quick sniff from a dog would garner her lifting her lips to show her teeth. They both enjoy treats and will need time getting used to a new home, family & routine.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
