h a hefty appetite, so he does need plenty of exercise to keep his perfect size. Everybody that sees him compliments his very handsome and soft coat. He is a light shedder. Jerry really enjoys jumping in the car for a car ride to go for some walks. He rides good in the car hanging his head out the window most of the time. He's not a fan of motorcycles so he does react to them with a short bark when he sees them. While exploring the parks and trails he walks nicely on the leash but does want to greet every person and dog he sees. He's very friendly with kids of all ages, adults and other puppies. not much of a runner but will try to chase squirrels and other wild animals. And he likes some short dips in the water. When Jerry is at home, he's a perfect gentleman. He is completely housetrained, not one single accident in the house. He is happy laying around and looking out the windows. Occasionally, he enjoys getting up to play with some stuffed toys with his housemate. He is a minimal barker, and his foster dad has only heard a few short barks from him. He sleeps hard, usually on the couch or chair all through the night with little to no stirring……. but he does snore! He's not a fan of the crate but will go in with some encouragement. But with his house manners being so good the crate isn't used often. Jerry Orion would do great with any size family (kids, other dogs of any size) but he is not cat friendly. He tries to chase every cat he sees. A fenced yard is a must due to his curiosity of people and other animals. Jerry is now completely vetted, neutered, chipped and just received a 6-month Proheart injection. (Heartworm preventative) Jerry Orion is located in the Myrtle Beach, SC. We rescued Jerry in 2021 after animal control visited his home several times. During the 4th visit, he was seized and taken to the shelter. He was full of parasites, had ear infections, heartworms, skin issues, and an embedded collar. :( He was very underweight. He had lived without food, water or shelter and had not been taken care of by his "owner". Thank goodness someone spoke up and it was investigated. We pulled "Orion" from the shelter, got him all fixed up and healthy and he was adopted. The adopters had cats which he wanted to chase. Instead of returning him to us, as our contract states, he was given away. He had not been to the vet in four years until we got him back recently, luckily. Now he is completely vetted, healthy and ready for a family. He is looking for a forever home, foster home or a foster to adopt home. He went to a temporary place when returned to us as we were given a short notice and it was imperative we got him back and to the vet. Now he is healthy and ready to move on to the next chapter!

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
