REALLY needs is a job – and an **experienced** handler who knows how to channel her energy, smarts, and drive. Looking for your next working partner, adventure buddy, or sport dog prospect? #MADloveMoxie, a stunning spayed 5-year-old female Malinois (she just had a birthday!), currently in MI, is the real deal. She's smart, driven, and ready to go go go. Make no mistake — this girl is not a couch potato. She needs a purpose, not just a few walks and ball throws a day. If you know the breed, you know what I mean. Personality & Temperament: She’s incredibly loyal, but not immediately warm and fuzzy. She's aloof with strangers and doesn’t hand out affection freely. But once she bonds? She’ll move heaven and earth for you. And she will always make sure you are within eyesight and earshot. She's goofy and endearing with her people, but serious when it's time to work. She's a dog you earn, and in return, you’ll get a partner who will have your back through anything. Drive: Ball is life. No, really — she’ll play until she drops, so her new human needs to manage her intensity. Toy drive is through the roof, higher than food drive, although she will work for cheese (diva status). She knows “drop it,” has great off-leash recall once bonded, and checks in naturally and often. Training & Activities: She’s currently training in Flyball (retrieves, jumps, tug/ball switches, just starting box turn) and absolutely loves it — she’ll drag you into the building when it's her turn. She’s also: • Run alongside a quad and bike (working on bikejoring/canicross) • Enjoyed trail runs and hikes, always packing her ball • Played in water, bit at the hose, and relaxed in creek puddles • Shows promise for scent work, SAR, or barn hunt • Learning directional cues while running At Home: She stays near her person in the yard, self-entertains with her ball, and keeps eyes on you at all times. She’s crate-trained (no wire crates please) and knows: • Sit • “Around” (disc cue) • “No” (leave it) • Load up / kennel • Drop it Ideal Home: • No kids, cats, or small dogs (she ignores chickens) • Other aloof, neutral dogs OK with proper intros (lives peacefully with a submissive female GSD and a male Malinois) • Someone active, structured, and experienced with working breeds (especially Malinois) • A job or sport-oriented lifestyle Bonus Quirks: • Loves puddles and water • Bites at the hose like it owes her money • Will carry her ball literally everywhere • Bonded deeply to one person first, then her fiancé — her new person should be ready to earn that trust This girl is intense, intelligent, athletic, and loyal once you break through her shell . If you’re looking for a project dog, she isn’t it. But if you’re looking for a partner? She just might be your once-in-a-lifetime dog. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
