t just 4 weeks old, he’s already got main character energy. This black and rust Doberman prince isn’t just a puppy… he’s an experience. A vibe. A gentle giant in the making who’s currently wobbling around like a baby moose on roller skates but will soon grow into an absolute unit of grace, muscle, and mischief. As the big brother of the crew, Poet takes his job seriously. Which is to say, he bullies with love, cuddles with enthusiasm, and keeps a watchful eye on his sisters Rhyme, Epic and Sonnet — when he’s not stealing their toys or stepping on them like a clumsy bodyguard with paws too big for his body. Poet’s paws are MASSIVE. We’re not saying he’s going to be big, but you might want to start looking into a king-sized dog bed and a forklift. He’s already giving off “future 90-pound lapdog” energy and we are here for it. WARNING: Adopting Poet will require the following: Fenced yard – This boy needs space to run, explore, and be the majestic beast he was born to be. A 5-ft fence minimum. (No, seriously.) Stable home – Not one that disappears every Mercury retrograde. Poet’s looking for forever, not "just for now." Commitment – 10 to 15 years of cuddles, chaos, and canine poetry written in muddy paw prints across your heart and your floor. Willingness to crate train, socialize, and attend obedience training – Because Poet’s going to be big, bold, and brilliant, and he needs a human who can help him become the goodest boy of them all. Things you can look forward to with Poet: Snoring louder than your grandpa Slobbery kisses that defy physics Epic walks where he carries a stick bigger than your arm Hiking, jogging, therapy work, obedience titles — he’s up for anything Sitting on your foot forever because it brings him joy (and because he's convinced he’s still lap-sized) Poet isn’t just a dog — he’s your future best friend, hiking buddy, co-pilot, and probably the reason you’ll cancel plans just to stay home and stare at him. He’s the full Doberman package: brains, brawn, beauty, and a heart too big for his own ribcage. Adopt Poet. Become part of his legend. And make sure you’ve got good liability on your heart… because this boy is going to steal it. United Doberman Rescue: Where future icons like Poet begin their reign. .uniteddobermanrescue All potential adopters must fill out the adoption application. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
