l he is. When playtime winds down, Bucky’s favorite spot is right by your feet, happily chewing away and keeping you company. He’s got a big smile, a bigger heart, and he’s ready to find his forever family! Come meet Bucky at Burbank Animal Shelter and let his joy rub off on you! From Bucky’s Day Foster Volunteer: Bucky's first walk today was good, not great. I give him a C-, but practice makes perfect (or at least better) It was suggested I use my standard leash and take the metal as a backup, and I am very thankful for that advice. I leashed him up with both, and 20 minutes into the walk, he chewed through my leash in 2 places (it's now in a random Burbank trash bin). He will no doubt get better with each outing. The good news is that he didn't pull much at all. He was appropriately obedient. He was interested in humans and other dogs and didn't growl or bark. He loves getting pets and is super friendly. We got coffee, which he thought was just OK, and then we took a break in the grass under a shady tree, which he loved. He's quite the cuddle bug. What a dream date. Bucky has evolved quickly into a fantastic companion. Alicia has all the Happy Tails collars and harnesses for washing, so I had to re-fit the boy this morning. He knew exactly why I was there and sat patiently while I outfitted him. He still pulls on the leash (even the metal one) as we leave his kennel, but once we are inside the main building, he drops the leash and is on his way. He hasn't pulled on the leash once during our walks. Today we walked the Chandler path and stopped off to get coffee. We met a nice lady on the path who was walking her little chihuahua mix. Bucky sat patiently by my side while we chatted, and he was a calm gentleman with her dog. Just outstanding. Upon our return, I let Nick know about that interaction, and he confirmed that Bucky is really mellow during play group, so that tracks. I firmly believe that he would make an ideal companion for someone who wants a fun dog to walk, play, or hang out. He makes friends wherever he goes, and is just the best little guy. 7/30 from his day foster: Oh. My. Goodness. This dog! Lil' Bucky Adventure Dog (aka Buckminster Fuller, aka Mister Silly Burger) is the best little guy! We had the very best morning. He loves his walks, and he's 90% loose leash. He loves meeting new people and is so good with dogs of all shapes and sizes. A total gentleman, all around. We stopped off at Romancing the Bean, where he had his first pup cup (that I'm aware of). Spoiler, he loved it. We stopped off at Lowes for a couple of plants and a pump for my fountain, and he was very well behaved walking through the store (it took a minute to find the pump, and of course he made a new friend along the way). I cannot, for the life of me, understand why no one has snatched him up. He will make a tremendous companion to a lucky human.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
