love and fun to your life? Meet Amber, a practically perfect pup… well, almost… honestly! She is smart, sweet, playful, funny, affectionate, and sometimes a little goofy. Amber loves people, snuggles, belly rubs, chew toys, and hanging out. She is mostly an indoor dog with moderate energy, so she is normally pretty mellow, and she is wonderful in the home. But she does enjoy her time sunbathing on the back deck. We think Amber is around two years old, and she is just under 40 pounds. Amber is spayed, microchipped, and up to date on all her vaccinations. She is crate trained, house trained, knows all her basic commands, and is very food-motivated, so she is responsive to training. As mentioned, she loves people, but we have not seen her with younger children, only adults and older kids. She really is a sweet girl! Amber is good on walks except for some reactivity to other dogs. Normally, if the other dog is calm, we can walk past with minimal or no reaction, but if the other dog lunges or barks, then Amber will lunge and bark in response. We do not let her get too close to other dogs for that reason. This reactivity has significantly improved and seems to get better every day. Why are we seeking to rehome Amber? That’s the “almost” perfect pup part. We adopted Amber ten months ago after three very successful meet and greets with our other dog (an older staffy who is also a rescue). Initially, Amber and our other dog did great together. They played; they snuggled and had no conflicts. But several months later, Amber started getting increasingly aggressive. To be clear, she was only showing aggression towards our other dog, never towards people. We did all we could to resolve this aggression, including working with two very reputable dog trainers, but we were not successful. This is strictly an issue of two dogs in the house. Amber cannot comfortably share her space with another dog. We can walk Amber alongside our other dog without any problems. And they sleep in their crates, which are next to each other in our bedroom. We just cannot let them loose together in the house or yard. As such, we have made the very difficult decision to rehome her. If Amber were our only dog, we absolutely would keep her. We adore her. It tears at our hearts to give her up, but we realize this is for her own well-being. I have always had dogs. Amber is my 7th dog and my 4th rescue. Every one of them lived long, happy lives in my home. We adopted dog #6, my first staffy, four years ago, and he is the best boy ever. So, I feel like I know dogs well, and Amber really is a great dog. She will be a wonderful companion and family member for the right home, thriving as your one and only canine best friend. Please only serious inquiries. We want to ensure that Amber goes to a good home that will give her the care, attention, and companionship she deserves. I will work with you to ensure that Amber has a smooth transition into your home. Amber will come to her new home with a crate, dog bed, food vault, a couple of halters, leads, a cold-weather fleece, and more. Please reach out if you are interested in hearing more about Amber and would like to meet her. We are in Davis, CA, but I am willing to drive a reasonable distance for a good home. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
