ghly 2 year old, 42# red boy with a lot of grit and a whole lotta heart. I probably made some bad decisions, and ended up getting whomped by a car back in March, which broke my front leg real bad, back leg not so bad, and cracked a couple of ribs. I also have a whole lotta luck, because the surgeons said I beat the odds, healed up nice, and now I can run around on all four of my legs like a regular dog again! It is time for ‘Shiners to move on to bigger adventures and find a Forever Family. I’m learning how to be an inside dog! So far I’m really good in a crate (there has been A LOT of crate since I got here, because of the bones). I can walk on a leash, load into any crate, eat any snack, learned to tug like a working dog, love learning new stuff, and looooove to snuggle. There is a cat here, and I’m really interested in him but I try to be cool about it. Foster Ma does a lot with her dogs so I’ve traveled to a few different states and Foster Ma says I travel like a sport dog- no worries in the car crate and I hop out at new places like no big deal- just ready to Go Do All The Things. I’m not a wild and crazy guy, but love to toss a toy for myself and want to be involved in everything that is happening. I’m even going camping next to a river in a few weeks! One thing that I’m not cool with is other dogs. They stress me out. There are videos of me hanging with other dogs, but that was when I was all busted up. Foster Ma thinks my feelings could change with the help of a trainer and lot of patience, but I prefer to charge in and show them I can be a tough guy if left to my own devices. You read the part about my bad decisions, right? I have current vaccines, no heartworms, and heard something about being neutered soon. Because of all my busted bones, I will probably have a little limp forever, would do best if kept on supplements and my Forever Family doesn't let me do high-impact stuff. I'm good for hiking, swimming, and romping, but shouldn't be allowed to jump from high surfaces or act feral and parkour off the couch at high speeds (boo). Foster Ma can fill you in on the details, those are too boring for 'Shiner to worry about, because I FEEL FINE! You can see more about me on instagram acdra_shiner. Foster Ma can answer questions there or over email! Please contact ridgeandvalleydogsgmail. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
