mmer girl too! Though she'll never say no to a movie night in, she loves running around the yard with her people whenever she can. She can be a little shy with new people at first, but warms up quickly with the promise of snacks! OTHER PETS: Strawberry has been relaxed around other dogs during her time at TJO, and would likely get along with another dog in the home. She would likely match best with a dog that will encourage her to play, but also understands when to take breaks. [Likely (Must Meet First)] OWNER EXPERIENCE: Someone that has experience with dogs with skin issues or allergies would be ideal for Strawberry, but overall she would do well with someone that is willing to be dedicated to managing her skin health and veterinary care. [First Dog / Some Experience] KIDS: Strawberry can be uncomfortable with some handling and can be excitable at times, so she would do best with kids that are old enough to understand how to interact with her and when to let her have her own space. [10+ (Must Meet First)] ACTIVITY LEVEL: Strawberry can be excitable with her favorite people, but would also enjoy a good snooze on the couch at the end of the day. She loves to explore and would be a great walking buddy, and with further positive reinforcement training could even do well with hiking! [Good Walking Buddy] VETERINARY CARE: Strawberry arrived at TJO with some skin issues that she's still being treated for. It's possible that her skin issues are the result of fleas or allergies, so she may need on-going medicated baths or a restricted diet to maintain her skin health. A good relationship with a vet would be best to ensure that she gets the care she needs, even after her skin heals. [Above Average] LEVEL OF TRAINING NEEDED: Strawberry is still at the beginning of her training journey, and will do best learning with someone who can offer both patience and confidence while she adjusts. Positive reinforcement training will help Strawberry not only learn her basic cues & skills, but also help her to bond with her new owner. [Minimal] GROOMING: Strawberry is currently receiving medicated baths to help heal her skin and encourage new, healthy fur to grow in. It's possible that she may need to continue her shampoo treatments occasionally throughout her life if her allergies were to flare up again. [Routine Bathing]

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
