most, if any, of the things other dogs enjoy as puppies. He was picked up by animal control as a stray, suspected to be a discarded hunting dog left to fend for himself. After coming to TFP and going to his foster home, it took him a little while to understand what seemed to him to be the foreign comforts of a home and a soft dog bed. Now he understands, and this boy is ready to leave the past behind him and join his very own forever family! When meeting Milo for the first time, he is a bit shy and reserved but once you've earned his trust, be ready to meet the Milo who is a loyal companion, quickly on his way to becoming a "Velcro dog." Milo definitely does love his people and their companionship, and he wants to be with them as much as possible. His trust and love are worth the little bit of patience it may take to get there. Milo gets along great with other dogs and will flourish in a home with a confident dog companion to guide him when he feels a bit insecure and help build his confidence in new situations. Loud noises can still be a bit scary for him, and he feels much more at ease walking alongside another dog. He's wonderful with children and warms up to them quickly! While we have not tested his compatibility with cats, he does not seem to have a high prey drive. When it comes to fun, Milo loves a good Benebone and is now happily (for the first time ever) discovering the joy of playing with toys, especially during playtime with his doggy friends. He’s a quick learner, already house-trained, crate-trained, and knows “sit.” Being highly treat-motivated will make his ongoing training both easy and fun. And, if you love car rides, Milo’s your guy – he's great in the car and enjoys the breeze with his nose out the window! Milo is a survivor in every sense of the word, having recently completed heartworm treatment. While his heart is still on the mend, The Furever Project will cover any remaining treatment costs until he gets a clean bill of health (negative heartworm results). Until clear of heartworms, he can still be adopted under a foster-to-adopt contract. Milo is looking for a patient family who can provide him with a loving, stable home environment while ensuring he gets the right balance of rest and gentle activity for a full recovery.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
