breeder. Lila is a very sweet curious little Shih Tzu. She is initially shy but warms up quickly. She loves her food and is a great eater! Her foster Mom lovingly calls her "Thumper" because when she races through the house she makes a thumping noise as if she were a 50 lb dog. Once Lila warms up she just wants to follow you everywhere and be your shadow! She loves toys and has a lot of personality for a pup that lived most her life in a kennel. She just wants to feel loved! She is great around all sizes of dogs and cats. A year ago Lila did break/fracture her front legs due to jumping off of a couch and incorrectly landing. She more like flew forward and landed wrong, this is probably because she didn't know how to get down. Lila can never be allowed to jump off furniture of any kind, also needs a home with minimal stairs. She had surgery by the top orthopedic surgeon in Kansas City and she has healed well. We also did a special blood test on her to verify that she had no underlying issues that would cause her bones to be weak. Lila has now learned how to use doggie stairs to get up and down off of her fosters bed and couch. Lila is not housebroken. With consistency taking her outside she does well but she will sometimes have an accident during the day when her foster is at work. A potty pad is provided and used. As for grooming, she is very squirmy. The Shih Tzu breed needs grooming every 4-6 weeks and she will need to go to an experienced groomer. Children 10 and older please. I have been spayed, vaccinated, heartworm tested negative and microchipped. Has also had a dental. If you are interested in adopting me, please complete the adoption application located at .furrykidsrefuge/adoptadog and a dedicated volunteer will get back to you as soon as possible. Furry Kids' Refuge is in need of good quality dog and puppy food with meat as the first ingredient. You can drop off donations at our weekly adoption events at the Lee's Summit Petco (1860 NW Chipman Road, Lee's Summit, MO), Saturdays only from 11am to 2:00 p.m. Donations are tax deductible as allowed by law. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
