LIVE OIL NEEDS A FOSTER OR FOREVER HOME!!!! Come meet Olive oil and other great adoptable dogs this Sunday (07/27) from 12-3 pm at the PetSmart in Silver Spring, MD (12020 Cherry Hill Rd, Silver Spring, MD 20904)! Name: Olive Oil Best Guess for Breed: Terrier mix Best Guess for Age: 5.5 years as of July 2025 Gender: Female Approximate Weight: 26 lbs Gets Along With: Other dogs! We haven't seen her with cats but ate happy to discuss integration techniques with potential adopters. We do not recommend her for a home with children under the age of 12. Currently Living At: DC area foster home Olive Oil is Looking For: This small sweetie landed in the shelter through no fault of her own. She's well out of the puppy yips and knows what the most important thing in life is - being safe and loved and under her own roof. Having her own home, her own humans is tops on her list. And sniffy walks and world exploration and a cushy dog bed and quality kibble - all those are also on the list. What do you say? Does Olive Oil get her fresh start with you? Are you her happily ever after? What My Foster Says About Me: Olive Oil (responds to Olive) is a sweet, fun girl. She's out of her crazy puppy years, but she still has some wonderful energy! She loves long walks and runs, and wants to greet every dog she passes. Olive has a gentle play style and loves to fetch with tennis balls and play with hard chew toys. She's happy to be your little spoon, your pillow, or even your scarf when cuddling in bed. She loves to give kisses, and will quickly fall asleep near her people. She's also an excellent houseguest - done great with housetraining, sleeps through the night, doesn't mind the shower or bath, perfect copilot in the car, and isn't afraid of thunder or fireworks. She knows which toys are hers and which household items and kids' toys are off-limits. The only thing she wants to steal is your heart and some kisses. Olive just doesn't appreciate attention from toddlers, particularly when they try to play with her when she is busy playing with her own toys. She would be an amazing dog for a family with older children or all adults. She's ready to share her love and have some fun with you! Medical: Olive Oil was heartworm positive, but this Lucky Dog got extra lucky! This pup is part of a groundbreaking study we are conducting at our South Carolina Rescue Campus that has the potential to change the way shelters across the United States treat heartworm positive dogs. All dogs in the study are placed at random in either the 2 shot or 3 shot protocol with strictly monitored protocols in place. Four weeks following their final injection, the pups are eligible to transport to the DC area for placement in foster or adoptive care. After treatment concludes, we work with adopters to arrange a free follow up heartworm test after 6 months, followed by a second test at 9 months. Olive Oil has completed the treatment and activity restriction phase, and is awaiting her six month follow-up test. Lucky Dog cannot guarantee any dog is housebroken. All of our dogs are working on their crate training. TO ADOPT: The adoption fee for this dog is $475, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations, spay/neuter, and heartworm treatment. If you are interested in adopting, please complete the Adoption Questionnaire online at bit.ly/adoptaluckydog Lucky Dog Animal Rescue does our best to provide accurate information about the dogs we have for adoption. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
