ee fruit! COCONUT NEEDS A FOREVER HOME!!!! Come meet Coconut and other great adoptable dogs this Sunday (08/03) from 12-3 pm at the PetSmart in XXX (3351 Richmond Highway, Alexandria, VA 22305)! Name: Coconut Best Guess for Breed: Lab mix Best Guess for Age: 2.5 years as of February 2025 SEX: Male Approximate Weight: 53 lbs Gets Along With: Other dogs! We haven't seen him with kids or cats but he can be tested if you have them. Currently Living at: DC area boarding partner What Coconut is Saying: Hello, I am Coconut! I am SWEET, curious about the world, and humans who know me say I am not only beautiful but also full of pawtential. In fact, I like and am good with so many things already: people, dogs, walks, adventures, snuggles, food, smiling, being funny, you name it! I am not even afraid of thunder. I do have a challenge, though. I get anxious sometimes. I think it's because I don't have a stable home yet, and also I don't like crates. See, I am a tall, long lab. I think tall long labs and crates don't get along too well. But anyway, I take a medicine that helps me and I recently had a little pawcation away from boarding in a cool house with a doggy friend and understanding people and I did so good! I can see a bright nice future ahead where I'll become a family pet who gives his people so much love and joy. I need a patient, attentive, and understanding family who will help me get there. The reward will be well worth it! I am smiling about it in my dreams! What My Foster Says About Me: Coconut is doing great! He seems to enjoy being with other dogs and plays really well in the backyard with our neighbor's dogs. His favorite thing is to be with his humans and is working through some separation anxiety. Coconut loves to greet his humans when we come home and will lay on the couch with us when watching TV. Overall, Coconut will be a great addition to his forever family! Lucky Dog cannot guarantee any dog is housebroken. All of our dogs are working on their crate training. TO ADOPT: The adoption fee for this dog is $460, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations and spay/neuter. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
