CLEO NEEDS A FOSTER OR FOREVER HOME!!!! Name: Cleo Best Guess for Breed: Lab mix Best Guess for Age: 3.5 years as of June 2025 SEX: Female Approximate Weight: 46 lbs Gets Along With: Other dogs! We haven't seen her with cats or kids but we are happy to discuss integration techniques with any potential adopters! Currently Living at: DC area foster home Special adoption considerations: Dogs from Puerto Rico have a major transition to go through when they arrive and will need humans who are very committed to socialization. We think Cleo would do best with either a resident dog or a family who can make sure she can go on walks regularly with other dogs, visit the dog park, or go to doggie daycare to learn the ropes. Cleo is Looking For: This sweetie enjoyed island life on Puerto Rico but there aren' enough homes for all the dogs there. So she came to the DC area on a mission to find her forever family! She's eager for sniffy walks, romps in the park, and all the adventures her new humans can dream up. All those new smells, the new environment - she's looking forward to it. Quality kibble and a cushy dog bed are on her wish list too, natch. You know what, though? She's out of the puppy yips and as an experienced dog, knows what is most important in life: Being safe and loved and under her own roof. In exchange, she promises all the love and loyalty in her furry little body, What do you say? Can you see this girl by your side? What My Foster Says About Me: Cleo is an absolute gem and has been a wonderful houseguest from day one. She hasn't had any accidents in the house and will let you know when she needs to go out by going to the door. At night, she sleeps peacefully in her crate and seems to do just fine in it during the day too. Cleo is a social butterfly who loves meeting new people and other dogs. She’s pretty good on the leash, though she does have a little streak of stubbornness now and then—just enough to keep things interesting! Indoors, Cleo transforms into a total Velcro pup, happiest when she’s snuggled up close. She’s a champion couch potato and is just starting to discover the joys of stuffed and rope toys. If you’re looking for a loving, loyal companion who’s as affectionate as she is easygoing, Cleo might be the perfect fit for your home and heart. Heartworm information: Cleo is a truly Lucky Dog. She tested positive for heartworms, but has been treated already! Heartworm is not contagious to people or other pets, but results from mosquito bites. Heartworm, if left untreated, is life threatening, but after treatment, dogs that were heartworm positive should suffer no significant long-term effects so long as they are kept on a monthly heartworm preventative. Heartworm dogs can resume full active and normal lives, but need to be kept calm for 4-6 weeks after treatment. Cleo has completed the treatment and the activity restriction period. Lucky Dog cannot guarantee any dog is housebroken. All of our dogs are working on their crate training. TO ADOPT: The adoption fee for this dog is $475, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations, spay/neuter, and heartworm treatment. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
