FOSTER OR FOREVER HOME!!!! Name: Jill Best Guess for Breed: Poodle mix Best Guess for Age: 5 years as of June 2025 SEX: Female Approximate Weight: 31.8 lbs Gets Along With: Other dogs! We haven't seen her with cats but we are happy to discuss integration techniques with any potential adopters! Due to her fear and shyness, she might not be a good fit for homes with small children. Currently Living at: DC area foster home Check out these videos of Jill: youtube/shorts/XkKzYw2JXCo, youtube/shorts/R5ruArrKQUs. Special adoption considerations: This dog was rescued from a breeding operation that is shutting its doors. She has not been well socialized with new people and has lived her whole life with other dogs. New noises, cars, bikes, and other things may create fear and anxiety. She will need a patient adopter who can give her time to come out of their shell and learn that the world is a wonderful and welcoming place. Because she is nervous and shy, she is REQUIRED to go to a home with a confident, welcoming resident dog who will show her the ropes. ABOUT JILL: Because Jill didn’t grow up around people, the outside world is still new and sometimes overwhelming for her. Noises, traffic, and strangers can feel scary, but with patience and kindness, Jill is beginning to discover that people and places can be safe and even wonderful. Jill is making quiet but meaningful progress every day. She has learned to walk nicely on a leash in calm neighborhoods and is even conquering stairs—something she once thought was impossible! Recently, she surprised her foster family by leaving her crate to spend time in the kitchen and gently taking a bit of peanut butter from a hand. She’s also gaining confidence with mealtime, transitioning from hand-feeding to eating from her bowl. Because Jill has lived her whole life with other dogs and feels most comfortable following their lead, she is required to go to a home with a confident, friendly resident dog. Having a dog companion will help Jill learn how to be part of a family and reassure her as she continues to adjust to her new life. Jill’s ideal adopter will be patient and understanding, with a quiet and calm home and ready to celebrate small victories like a tail wag, a curious glance, or a step out of her comfort zone. In return, she’ll reward you with quiet companionship and the joy of watching her transform from a nervous pup into a cherished family member. If you have a loving home, a steady resident dog, and the heart to help a sweet soul blossom, Jill may be your perfect match. Lucky Dog cannot guarantee any dog is housebroken. All of our dogs are working on their crate training. TO ADOPT: The adoption fee for this dog is $460, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations and spay/neuter. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
