or apply to adopt this pet on the MPR website. Text 828-506-2742 for more information or to adopt the pet. To meet Ziggy is to love Ziggy! Ziggy is a 3-year-old boxer/pit bull mix who has been fostered for 2 years in a loving home. Both his back legs needed CCL surgery, which Dr. Crouch, Western Carolina Veterinary Surgery, performed. Ziggy has fully recovered and has no mobility issues. Ziggy loves to be home with his people. He is very loving and has been trained to know many commands. He gets along well with another dog. He enjoys walks and being outside. Adoptive parents need to be aware of reactivity when new people enter his space. On walks we use a training collar for reactivity on leash towards dogs we pass. He also will come with pre-paid training to help him transition to his new home. New owner can continue his training to become an even better companion. He alerts you when someone comes to the door. He needs a loving home and a steady hand. Ziggy's foster parents will support his new owner by providing Ziggy's beds (off the ground porch bed and inside bed), full medical records and two months of his food and medicine (heart guard and fluoxetine). He is a patient at Broad River Animal Hospital in N. Buncombe County. A home visit and vet references will be expected. Text Margaret at 828-506-2742 today to learn more about, meet or adopt sweet Ziggy! All Mountain Pet Rescue (Asheville) animals are up-to-date on vaccinations, spayed/neutered and micro-chipped before adoption. Contact the foster parent or Mountain Pet Rescue at petsmpravl for more information. Please note that visual breed identification of companion animals has been proven to be unreliable, so for most of our animals we provide a best guess at predominant breed or breed mix. We get to know each of our animals as an individual and do our best to describe and place pets based on personality not breed label. Mountain Pet Rescue is a 501(c)(3) non-profit tax deductible charity (EIN 82-3039637) located in Asheville, NC.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
