utts was coming for me. It’s taken me some time to settle in with so many changes and so many people here, but I’m coming along, and they are learning more about me. I’m looking forward to finding a home with a dog savvy good leader as I can be temperamental as some Shih Tzus are. I am not a first-time kind of dog. • OTHER DOGS/CATS/KIDS: I met other dogs at Mostly Mutts and wasn’t ready to play with them, but I also didn’t show any aggression, so if you have a nice lower key type of dog at home already, let’s meet! / Cats unknown. / A home without kids is best as I can be nippy when I’m unsure about things. • PERSONALITY/ENERGY LEVEL: I’m a calm-natured, somewhat timid little guy who likes it when the volunteers take their time with me so I can get to know and love them and then show them my cute and sweet little nature. In the temporary foster home I visited, I didn’t jump on or off the furniture, though I did like sitting up there with them. I think I may need some extra time to feel at home as noises in the home startled me, especially at nighttime. I did some growling at sounds I don’t think I understood, and I did nip a finger when being petted on the couch. I think that everything is just a bit new and overwhelming to me, so I have used my teeth when uncomfortable with a situation. I do bark a good bit at the shelter, so no apartment/condo type home please. / My current energy level is 3-4. It may increase a little once I settle into my new home and feel at home. • SKILLS/CRATE/POTTY: I am a student in the Mostly Mutts University training program and look forward to learning a lot with my trainer! Check back soon to see what I've learned. / My crate manners are good at Mostly Mutts, and I like it when the volunteers let me come out of it on my own. / My potty manners have been good on the shelter schedule with very few accidents, so hopefully that will be the case in my new home, too. • LIKES/DISLIKES: I like it when the volunteers give me a few minutes to get to know them. I also like when folks get down on my level to leash me. I enjoy climbing in laps and when people talk sweetly to me. I’m sure we’ll find lots of other things we will enjoy doing together. / I don’t like being rushed and I’m sure I wouldn’t like it if I didn’t get enough love, attention and training. • MEDICAL: I'm current on annual vaccinations, micro-chipped and neutered. I have an unusual, some say “wonky,” gate to my step. It’s been checked out medically and no issues were found, so I guess it’s just my walk. It does not seem to cause me pain. I do not need long walks as a result, just a short one will do to go out to the bathroom. I’m taking a good over-the-counter joint supplement daily and I like it in a little piece of cheese, please. I’m looking for a great family that will be my leader, love me and take great care of me furever! My adoption fee is $299.00, and I’m located in Kennesaw, Ga.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
