dly. First we took them to the yard to throw the ball and get out some initial energy. Domino was a track star and Zeus enjoyed watching his brother and trotting around. Both dogs knew sit and listened well. Zeus jumped a little but he was easily corrected and then didn't jump again the remainder of the day. We gave them both treats and you could tell they were well trained, they took the treats so gently and sat nicely while waiting their turn. We then went for a car ride and to the park where they did amazing in the car. (I also think they would love the beach or the pool as Zeus later tried to go swimming to cool off). These two guys would be perfect for someone who wants a dog with training and doesn't want to worry about puppy antics. I also think they would do well in a family based on how good they are with people and based on the fact they weren't startled by any kids at the park. Both dogs are phenomenal and I can't emphasize enough how lucky their future family will be. They walked well on the leash, you could pet them or touch their paws, tail etc with no concerns. They didn't bark and they were just so happy to be along for the ride. A bonded pair may seem like alot of effort but honestly they were way easier than some single dogs - they both stay close to each other and have each other to play with. Both dogs are so deserving of the best home to enjoy the rest of their senior years." ZEUS - 15 years old, 72 pounds, friendly DOMINO - 45 pounds, friendly, happy Zeus and Domino were surrendered when their owner could no longer care for them. Together in the kennel, they are adorable. Zeus is a big boy with thick fluffy black fur and a long curly tail. Domino is smaller, black and white, Australian Shepherd look and very active. These two rascals have found themselves behind shelter bars but it hasn't affected their attitudes. Both are friendly and both enjoy treats, but Domino is quicker to sit for a treat. Both are active and playful but Domino, younger than his big brother, runs around a bit more than Zeus. Domino is also faster chasing tennis balls with Zeus not too far behind. See the pattern? LOL That's ok, Zeus is a bit older than Domino so we give him some grace. These two are super friendly and seemingly easy going. They both walked pretty good on the leashes which makes walks fun and enjoyable. Zeus and Domino are currently in a back kennel so if you come in and don't see them, please just ask.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
