lable for adoption and you should apply through our adoption application on our website at .arf-il/adopt/application/ DEXTER HAS DENTAL WORK SCHEDULED FOR THE WEEK OF JULY 7th AND WILL BE AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION AFTER. Dexter is a 6 year old male Maltese who weighs in at 12 pounds. This dog's adoption fee is $450. If you are still interested, please read more below. Dexter has the potential for being a very loving dog. Due to his history of basically not having loving human interaction he is wary when approached and runs away. When his foster is able to pick him up he is tense but very calm. He never shows any sign of aggression or defensiveness. He will lay in his foster's arms and lap. When Dexter first arrived he did not know how to use stairs but has since become comfortable going up stairs - he is still learning to go down. He will not take a treat from your hand, but will if it is left on the floor for him. He is not leash trained but we're working on it. He has learned to use the doggie door on his own. Dexter has lots of doggie companions in his foster home and he loves being with them. He will play with them and his tail is nearly always wagging. He is very close with another foster dog who came in with him - Bentley, an 8 year old Shih Tzu. Dexter will follow his foster and always looks to see what is going on. His foster feels Dexter really wants to be loved and just needs time and patience to be fully trusting. He gets excited with the other dogs when their food is being prepared and eats very well. He can be a bit vocal at times - letting you know he wants attention even though he is still on the wary side. Dexter is microchipped, up to date on all vaccinations and neutered. This dog's family will be required to complete a basic obedience course of their choosing. A meeting will not be scheduled until you have an approved application, so if you are interested in adopting this dog, fill out an Online Application today! Once your application has been approved, an ARF volunteer will contact you to arrange a meeting. Thank you for considering a rescue pet from A.R.F.-Animal Rescue Foundation! We are based in Wheaton, IL and conduct adoption events in the DuPage County area. If you are interested in adopting one of our pets, please submit an adoption application at .arf-il/adopt/application/ Adoption appointments are scheduled based on the order of applications received, so submit your application early! Submitting an application does not commit you to any animal but does get you a head start with the adoption approval process. Due to a high volume of applications, we are often unable to respond to questions or schedule meetings until your application has been approved. More information about our adoption process can be found on our website here: .arf-il/adopt/ As an all-volunteer, foster home-based organization, A.R.F. Animal Rescue Foundation does not have a facility where applicants can visit our animals. Please visit .arf-il/events/ for a list of our upcoming adoption events. Thank you for choosing to adopt, not shop!

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
