er. My father passed away in August 2024, and I brought Emilio to my home in Asheville, North Carolina. Unfortunately, my own chronic illnesses have worsened significantly, and I am no longer able to care for Emilio, despite my strong desire to honor my father's wishes. I am seeking a home or sanctuary or program that will accept a senior dog. Background and History Emilio was originally adopted by my father from the Marin County Humane Society in California approximately 11-12 years ago. Emilio was my father's service dog, trained to assist him as he was blind and needed guidance and companionship. Emilio is exceptionally trained and was a constant, calm companion to my father. Health and Veterinary Care Emilio has received exceptional veterinary care throughout his life. He has been under the care of: - Modern Animal, Marin County, CA - Charlotte Street Vet, Asheville, NC - Asheville Family Vet Associates, Asheville, NC Recent procedures include benign cyst removals and an extensive dental cleaning. He has undergone a comprehensive senior panel very recently, and tests showed good health overall with no evidence of Cushing’s disease, although initial indicators prompted detailed testing. Emilio is current on all vaccinations (Rabies, DHPP, Bordetella) and consistently receives heartworm and flea/tick prevention. Current medications include Trazodone and Gabapentin as needed for anxiety, grooming, or travel. Diet: Emilio eats approximately one scant cup daily (in the morning) of Hill's Science Diet Senior Adult 11+ Small Breed & Mini Breed Chicken Meal, Barley & Brown Rice Recipe Dry Dog Food. He eats no other food or treats at any other time. Behavior and Temperament HE IS NOT CRATE TRAINED YET AND CAN’T BE LEFT ALONE - HOWEVER HE IS A FAST LEARNER Emilio is extremely affectionate, calm, and gentle. He is accustomed to living indoors, is newly house-trained (dog door, potty pads), and needs regular bathroom breaks (approximately every 2 hours). He loves leisurely walks but is also perfectly content relaxing quietly near his person. Emilio previously lived as an only dog and prefers a calm environment; currently, he tolerates but generally ignores our two large standard poodles, who are loud and active. He is excellent with people and children of all ages and exhibits no aggressive behaviors. He has no history of biting, nipping, or resource guarding. Emilio does not like to be left alone, showing anxiety through crying or barking. Daily Life and Habits Emilio enjoys a structured, calm daily routine with regular meals, short neighborhood walks, and close companionship. He travels well in the car, secured in a car seat with a seatbelt harness. Emilio has always been professionally groomed regularly and tolerates grooming exceptionally well with sedation. Current Situation and Need for Rehoming Due to my rapidly declining health, frequent hospitalizations, and inability to provide daily care, Emilio is currently boarding at a reputable kennel in Asheville, NC. It breaks my heart to surrender him, but ensuring his continued care and quality of life is essential. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
