m up to new people. He is not used to being on a leash and does have some accidents inside. We are working to get him potty trained outside. Going out with another dog is a big help for him as he tends to imitate . Due to his nervous behavior, we are recommending an adult only home with someone who is patient and willing to give PJ the time he needs to come out of his little shell. PJ is an eager companion who wants to follow you everywhere (and will try to slip out the door with you). He will give your hand kisses but he does not like to be picked up or petted. Foster update: He likes to be close to people but not necessarily to be touched. He will shriek if you try to pet him when he does not want to be. We have been working on "touch" training. We say kiss or touch and he comes up and boops our hand. Sometimes he lets us scratch his chin or pet his head when he is doing this. Although he does not like petting/being held, he does have some separation anxiety and wants to know where you are. He loves chewing on bones such as nylabones and benebones and is quite the strong chewer. PJ really is a delightful little guy who would be an ideal companion for somebody who understands that although he loves to be with you, he does not want to be treated like a little dog to be held and cuddled. He would love someone to keep company at home. PJ needs: Fenced yard Adult only household Patience He spooks fairly easily and needs to be on a leash or in a fenced yard as he can slip out of his collar. We recommend a slip leash or harness as he would be very difficult to catch...running away is his first instinct. He does not like being picked up. He can be very underfoot - on or off leash, so this is something to consider for anyone not steady on their feet. He is not fully housetrained, but is learning the concept of going outside. Because he does not like the leash we would recommend that he have a home with a fenced yard where he can be let outside to continue on his housetraining. PJ can tend to get distracted and forget why he is outside so it's best to supervise whether he has gone or not! His crate is left open when he is not in it and he likes to go lay in it, especially in the evenings before bed time. His foster home has small and larger dogs and he is not a huge fan of the big dogs if they are running around. He has been sleeping in a dog bed in the bedroom at night. We do close the door or he likes to wander.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
