______________________________________________ Meet Antonio! Antonio is 2-3 years old - best guess Spaniel/Retriever/Poodle??; he is currently a little underweight at ~25lbs but a few extra snacks and he should be right where he belongs. Have you ever met a dog that gave off sweet happy vibes with tail wagging and soft sad eyes??? If you have, that's Antonio 100%. And if you have not, we strongly encourage you do! The day he was rescued they said he met them with tail wagging, ever so softly followed them greeting every dog and human, tail wagging and with a little prance. There was no indication that he had been bounced from flea market to home to back yard breeder and likely multiple times. Instead he was happy to move on and make new friends along the way. Our first indication he was exhausted and maybe insecure was him falling asleep standing up at his foster home. It happened for a full 24 hours until he realized he was safe. 24 hours later he made his way to a dog bed, placed his head on the pillow and slept. He had his vet appointment and was in the lobby once again making friends and anyone who engaged complimented on his wonderful personality. He is so precious when he climbs up, asks permission, and then curls up or stretches out for a snuggle on the couch. It's always such a natural interaction and relaxing for him. His potty training is going so well, a couple of accidents on day one and again after surgery but he takes correction very serious and is so apologetic. Antonio is fostered with other dogs. Cat intro pending, but other dogs from this situation have all lived in homes with felines, and apart from basic training have shown to be able to live with cats just fine. Antonio is neutered, up-to-date on core vaccines, dewormed, heartworm tested negative, current on flea/tick/heartworm preventative, and is microchipped! ____________________________________________________________________ **If you are interested, YOU NEED TO APPLY. Also, a follow-up email to infosafeatlast is strongly recommended. To pursue adoption, please register on .safeatlast. (Click Register on the left-hand side of our homepage.) When you receive your password on your email account, please log back on to our website to complete the SAFE AT LAST on-line adoption application. (Click Forms/Application on the left-hand side of our homepage and select the Adoption Application.) Once we have your completed application, if we feel you are a good match, we will contact you by email. (So, please check your SPAM.) Our process is straightforward but involves a phone interview, reference checks and a home assessment. An adoption donation of $450 applies. YOU CANNOT MEET OUR RESCUE ANIMALS UNTIL YOU HAVE BEEN APPROVED TO ADOPT. WE CANNOT CONSIDER YOU UNTIL YOU HAVE SUBMITTED THE FULLY FILLED OUT SAFE AT LAST ON-LINE ADOPTION APPLICATION. Delay in submitting your application will put you behind other potentially suitable applicants. Ultimately, approved adopters will be required to complete an adoption in Schoharie/Albany County. Thank you for your interest. (Sorry, we will not respond to generic "check the box," "Is s/he available," "Can you give me more information" inquiries.) NYS Rescue Registry No. RR 087

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
