dash; inforainbowbridgerescue Apply to Adopt: rainbowbridgerescue/applications/ Meet Emilio – A Gentle, Loyal Soul Searching for Peace Emilio is a sweet, affectionate, and service dog-trained 12-year-old Bichon Frise who’s looking for a peaceful, loving home to live out his golden years. This beautiful boy was the devoted service dog to his blind owner for over a decade, providing calm companionship and constant love. After his beloved person passed away in 2024, Emilio moved in with family, but due to worsening health issues, they can no longer care for him. He is now being fostered through Rainbow Bridge Hospice Rescue and is ready to find his next chapter. Sensitive & Anxious Emilio is grieving. He’s a deeply bonded dog who has experienced great loss, and it shows in his sad, anxious demeanor. He longs to be close to his person and struggles with being alone, often crying or barking when left behind. A calm home where someone is around most of the time would be best. House Training Needs While Emilio is mostly house-trained, he still has occasional accidents—especially when stressed or left alone for too long. A home with a doggy door and a consistent potty routine would be ideal. He is used to potty pads and a dog door setup. Ideal Home: Quiet and predictable Someone home most of the time and is willing to take him on occassional outings. A fenced yard and doggy door would help reduce his anxiety and support house training Best as an only dog, or with one equally calm and non-disruptive companion Children are fine if they are respectful and gentle He will need professional grooming every 8 weeks Health & Veterinary Care: Recently had a full senior panel — he has cataracts and a Grade 4 Heart Murmur. The type of heart murmur cannot be controlled by medication. Up to date on all vaccinations (Rabies, DHPP, Bordetella) Monthly heartworm and flea/tick prevention Recently had a benign cyst removed Eats Hill’s Science Diet Senior 11+ Small Breed Takes Trazodone or Gabapentin for grooming, travel, or anxiety Extras: Travels safely in the car with a seatbelt harness Professionally groomed regularly — tolerates well with light sedation Located in Durham, NC and available for local or regional adoption Our rescue has a referral to a speciality eye clinic and it is our hope we can restore his sight in at least one eye, therefore we need a local foster or adopter so he can continue his medical care, the rescue will take care of eye surgery. Emilio is looking for a soft place to land, a lap to snuggle into, and a heart big enough to understand his grief and help him heal. If you believe in second chances and the unmatched love of a senior dog, Emilio is waiting to meet you. Interested in adopting Emilio? 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
